If the service engine soon light has come on there should be a code(s). Some scanners do not read al the necessary BMW codes to diagnose a problem.
Nevertheless, I think it best practice to alway troubleshoot until there is a high likelihood that the problem is pinpointed. This is especially true when the symptoms can be generated by several different unconnected problems. In the end it almost always saves time and money. As an example, are the several suggestions for fixes in only a few posts.
