yes i also had the transmission failsafe error. the car won't drive over 40mph. luckly i was able to reset/clear the transmission failsafe error by this process i found on youtube, i can't find the video, but i have the write up at home, i can send you.

the cheap route will be:
1. take out your ABS and find retailers on ebay that will "repair e53 abs module" for about $100+
2. do what i did, go to a junkyard and get a used ABS module (e53, specific to your motor i believe), or buy one on ebay. and have someone with the software flash it to match your car.

Note: you can rule out the wheel sensors, either with a multimeter, or connect a BMW specific OBD scanner to the car, and see the sensor readings while you drive it.
