Actually, you're supposed to gently BUMP the mirror off it's base by striking it toward the windshield...then twist it back on when time to remount. This prevents damaging the spring mechanism that holds the mirror to the base.


The mirror is designed to easily separate from the base when bumped...so that in an accident...it doesn't become an object that an occupant can become impaled upon. If it is hit with any type of force...it breaks away from the base.



These are the BMW instructions...which apply not only to the type below...but also the mirrors with the larger base that contains the rain sensor, too. Just remove all the stuff from around the base...then bump the mirror off the base:
