Correct - the IBS does "regulate" the charge to the battery but this is a separate "regulator" from the main VR on the alternator. The two are in effect in series.

Also, it seems that not all alternators for the E70 range have a higher output rating than the E53 alternators - many variants are also rated at 170A/180A. I guess it's engine specific.

I haven't looked but are the mount points/electrical connectors/pulleys etc. the same? If the engine variant is the same family (i.e. 2005 E53 3.0d M57TU vs 2006 E70 3.0d M57TU2) then mount points/electrical connectors/pulleys might be the same but it seems like just another variable to take into account for not much gain.

Remember, you only need the power output your car can use - providing more power capacity doesn't mean the car can/will use it - unless you have added accessories that have a high power load.
