Most new systems are fully self contained. You will not need to buy a new nav unit (rear hatch) to install a new nav system.

Depending on what year you have, you could simply pickup a MK4 (DVD) system if you have the older CD (MK1/MK2) system. The MK4 has improved graphics and is much faster.

Otherwise, it's just picking one of the units like you're looking at and install it. Be sure to read up about functionality. Several threads here and I believe in Bimmerforums, specifically the E38 forum, as it's the same platform as the E53.
