Last time I checked, anyone who makes and sells shocks will tell you you're living on borrowed time once you get to 50k miles.
Me, I'm at 190k miles on my original rear shocks on my '01 3.0i with springs, with no plans to change. I don't feel much of a difference on the race track, but that's mostly because I don't actually drive this on the race track.
I changed my front struts with Bilstein B4's a couple of years ago, probably around 180k miles, thinking I might be due. Cannot tell any difference at all. The car drives perfectly.
Kind of like I mentioned with the other parts, as long as you don't replace good old parts with lesser new ones, the only downside is cost.
