Try going in a tight circle left and right with heavy throttle you can use brakes to keep car slow.

I have a feeling you are describing the front driveshaft slipping in the spline at the transfer case. BMW made two different length driveshafts and the short ones can sometimes end up being too short when the engine mounts wear and the front dif moves forward.

It will make a metalic clank when the spline slips to the next tooth.
