There are quite a few threads on the 4x4 light issue. From what I gathered the 4x4 light error is usually due to problems with:

Wheel sensors
Yaw sensor (under center console)
Steering angle sensor
Either ABS module or part of the ABS module

Are you able to pull any codes with INPA or any good BMW-specific scanner?
