Quite possibly yes.... This "box" is a vacuum reservoir and supplies vacuum to the turbo boost control. You need it. I'll bet that when/if you read the codes from the DDE (no DME guys..) you have codes for your boost control.

First thing I'd do is get a new vacuum reservoir and fit it.... It obviously failed and somebody decided it was cheaper to bypass it than replace it - which is true but that doesn't make it a good idea!
