Bimmer876 is on a distinguished road
I had the same intermittent issue for a year. Except when I bought my E53 it had Both passenger side tires blown out That shredded and ripped the wiring harness coming from the DME, yikes! There were a lot of electrical shorts and melted wires fused together. I had to change the DME and trace the fused wires all the way to the fuse box under the dash. I totally rebuild my AC system from The engine bay to the cabin. My AC system is now working "in part" only because I bypassed the pressure AC Pressure sensor black signal wire. To make a long story short, what I did was Connected the black Pressure sensor wire coming from the DME to the black radiator temperature sensor Wire and I my auxiliary fan and Ac compressor works. Only the drawback to this is the Aux fan will only spin at moderate speed which won't move a lot of air across your condenser when Ambient temperatures Are above 92 degrees while sitting in traffic.
