Being in a built up area or out in the countryside doesn't seem to make any difference, I was thinking that sound was being thrown back when passing a wall, but after driving 30+ miles with the window down, it doesn't appear to matter...... it is very strange
This is going to sound weird, but I had a similar issue on my e46 that ended up being bad caliper slide pin bushings on a set of rebuilt autozone calipers. I replaced the bushings and the noise went away... it was driving me crazy.
