Thinking out loud here; if the PCV is clogged, the engine will be starved for air on startup until the eccentric motor and/or throttle body can adjust to make up for it. Sound plausible?
I changed the valve cover and PCV hoses about 3 years ago. BMW replaced the angle connector/heater about the same time.
