I thought that it is like the E63. It has a sensor not in the wheel that detects the difference in rotation of wheels.
I bought my E63 with 18" wheels and installed 20" (not BMW). All I had to do was to go in the IDrive and reset the TPC.
dude i reset that Idrive like 1 million times.and nothing.BMW and bavarian said either take teh sensors out of teh stock rims and put them in teh new set or just get new for all 4 sensors and valve stems it will be a bit under 200 buck.
