The brake pad wear indicator will come on, prior to your pads being worn down to the backplate, to avoid disc (rotor) damage. You will need to change the pads, change the pad wear sensor (it will be worn down to it's trip point) and have the discs checked for minimum thickness using a micrometer or vernier calipers. The minimum disc thickness will be written on the circumference (outer edge) of the disc. This job can be done by a BMW dealer or by a brake shop. It's your choice. Just make sure, that if the job is done by other than a dealer, that you are getting good quality after-market parts or genuine parts.
