I run full size Pirelli Scorpions on my stock rims for the winter months and it does very well in both snowy and icy conditions.
I considered popping for a winter set (thinner) - I'm glad I didn't.
Unless one lives in the U.P. of Michigan, Syracuse or the Rocky mountains, I don't think the X5M needs thinner winter tires. (but I definitely think it needs winter tires - the summers are scary on ice).
