Chains?
I've driven in snow states extensively, and california regularly... they RARELY have 'chain control' which requires chains on AWD cars with snow tires.
If you have AWD and all season or winter tires you will be fine 99.99% of the time (this is R1 or R2). It would be an extraordinary day when a road is open, but they are requiring chains in additon to snows on an AWD (this is R3)

Now, there is a funny law in CA that you must actually CARRY chains for the car, but I had a set for the MDX for 10 years and NEVER OPENED THE BOX. Still brand new.
Are you sure about the chain laws where you are going? And the practical aspect of it?

PS Advice I give to friends that are freaked out about there new AWD with all seasons, but they have no new cables/chains is "just throw any old set of chains/cables in the back, they'll
never check to see if they fit!"
