Service managers and parts warranties.

A little over a week ago the expansion tank on my 2001 740iL blew out. It was a typical failure and I knew it was due. In fact, I had an appointment to get the car into my normal dealer (Dealer A) this week. I didn't make it.

The tank died about 13 miles from another dealer (Dealer B). Even though Dealer B was on my normal commute, I always used Dealer A's service department, mostly because I've bought two vehicles from them and I know them. But since Dealer A is 90 miles away, I was stuck having my car flatbedded to Dealer B. I had originally intended to let Dealer B do just enough work to get the car working so I could get it to Dealer A this week. But as I was ranting to the service manager at Dealer B about the fact that I'd just replaced the expansion tank less than two years ago, he stopped me and asked me if I had the receipt for the work. I told him yes, all my receipts were in the glove box. He said he'd check them out and get back to me.

To make a long story short, he went through my receipts and found that not only could he replace the expansion tank, fluid, belts, and t-stat under warranty, but that Dealer A had done work recently that should also have been covered under warranty. Now we're talking parts warranties here. BMW has a 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty on almost all parts. I didn't know that. So I called Dealer A and asked them about it. They called me back and said, yes, they had inadvertently charged me for parts and labor which should have been covered by the parts warranty. So now I have a check for over $700 coming back from Dealer A.

Moral of the story, keep your receipts and check to see if any repeat work/parts may be covered. Don't depend on the service manager to do it or you.

good story...at least you got your money back. you should have told them when they charged you for the repair. this is what i always ask my service manage, "the warranty covers it right?"

and yes, all oem parts and accessories come with 2 year warrantys.
