I suppose psi could play a factor......I only use the turbo tip on specific applications, won't even use it to ~speed clean~ 'crete if I was in a rush.

Here's my nozzles of choice for the car. Ceramic guts, with rubber booted holder.
15 and 25 degrees

J, just wanted to update you. The "turbo nozzle" included with my Ryobi and I'm sure Tiag's Karcher and other consumer grade electric PW's is not going to do anything to harm the finish unless you are intentionally stupid and hold it 1" from surface, etc.

I pre-rinsed my wifes car yesterday, the entire Rav4 with the Turbo tip held about 2 feet from the surface, no ill effects, and made for a much more efficient and safe rinseless wash afterwards, as I did not have nearly as much grime left on the paint that needed removing, the PW did most of the work.

This Ryobi has been a GREAT investment for safer washing so far this year!

Good to hear RB.

I got to use the Karacher unit and foam lance (with Maguires Gold Class soap) on the Accord this weekend, after a full brake job with Centric rotors and ceramic pads.

The foaming was enough to coat the car, nothing near snow or shaving cream. I pre-treated the NASTY wheels/wheel wells with Bike Brite (spray on-rinse off cleaner for motorcycles), the regular lance left them spotless.

I will need to p/u some foam soap to really test the foam lance, or see how Bike Brite works in the foam lance.

TiAg I'd say Gold Class soap isn't terribly concentrated, it's probably about a 1 oz per gallon soap.

In the foam lance I'd use Adams soap, at $35/gallon yes its more than Megs soap but also 2-3x more concentrated and great in foam lances.

As was mentioned earlier, the MTM foam lance will definitely put out more foam than the Karcher one, as well.

Phil @ DD sells the Adam's soap @ 35/gallon, also the Optimum Car Wash soap is a good soap at $30/gallon, both are pH neutral.

Hmmm.

I'm going to have to put on my thinking cap re: turbo nozzle on ~precious paint~.

Bad example, but this is what I think of when think of turbo nozzle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46SYYUjoca0

Even when PW exterior surfaces *aka, hard stone surfaces*, it's all about the GPM and I let the soap do all the work.

Now let me do so homework to see this GD vid...

Thats 3000psi held 1" away from a piece of wood.

I'll shoot a vid of me using it but my 1700psi rated machine did not cause any negative damage whatsoever using the included turbo nozzle with my Ryobi. I can always text it to you if you shoot me your phone # (I dont do youtube)

FWIW, the touchless jet washes, laser washes etc that are popular up north and down south too are using probably 1700-1800 psi on their "touchless" washes and the jets do come quite close to the paint.

As for Garry's video, I think on RawDetailTV now it is a paid subscription to see some of his videos. His YouTube videos are free but his touchless washing video was on RDTV which is now a payable service (I watched it while it was still free). If you have any questions on the technique just shoot him an email he is extremely quick to answer,

LOL, I did say it was a bad example......

When I said thinking cap, I just mean the force induced relative to the contaminates being pushed into the paint rather on a macroscropic level rather than the water/contaminates flowing off ...GPM plays a role here

Yes absolutely, as I said the commercial grade machines just aren't making the CU's and I think that's by design as the electrical units are meant to be more light duty anyway, they don't want to sell you a machine that is a light duty electrical but slap a turbo tip on it and you are skinning your toes.

My machine 1700psi x 1.2 gpm = 2040 CU's

Whereas more "commercial grade" machines like the Kranzle's are 1500psi and 2.0 GPM so they are up to 3000 CU's, the gpm increase makes a huge difference. Personally I'll sacrifice some gpm to keep the machine safe and as well to use less water to accomplish simpler results.

I guess we are not talking so much as what tip is on the machine (although it plays a factor) but what is the ratings on your electric PW that you use?

I believe TiAg's Karcher is around 1600psi and 1.25gpm as well so his is similar to mine in regards to final CU's.

I'm due to clean my grill off (Brinkmann stainless) with the PW this weekend, and definitely I'm sure will need the Turbo tip for a lot of the heavier stuff on the grates, the pan, etc.

I definitely boughte my Ryobi for the cars, motorcycle cleaning and anything light duty like my mower or power equipment. For house cleaning, windows, gutters etc or anywhere you need a lot of reach I will definitely be investing in a gas PW soon.

I use a Foaming Lance as a Pre- Wash step.

The idea being, remove as much grit and grim off your paint before you touch it!
I do similar to Smokey. Only i have changed a few steps of late.

I no longer pre wash with water, before a Snow Foam.

SnowFoam > Dwell of 10min > Rinse of with Shower setting on Hose (not pressure wash off) > 2 Bucket Method > Towel Dry.

Removing the "Wet he vehicle first" to soften things, has greatly improved how the Snowfoam removes the grit and grime.
I think once the vehicle is wet, the foam just sits on the water and slides off, without being able to fully soak into the grime and lift it off.

I am intrigued by your "Leaf Blower" idea Smokey, but i'm too scared to do it.
Just time i used my leafblower anywhere near the missus X5, it blew a 30mm Self Drilling screw under her tyre and you know what happened when i backed it up.....

Been getting good results following Salty Dogs process above, with a backpack blower dry instead of towel dry.

Figured after stepping up my exterior cleaning process, it was time to get serious with the tools for regular interior cleaning.

Picked up these.......

http://www.amazon.com/Ridgid-WD4522-.../dp/B0029NY9X0

Amazon.com: Ridgid 32698 VT2534 Auto Detailing Kit: Home Improvement_

Almost 20' of hose (with swivels at both ends), full set of quality automotive cleaning attachments and tons of suction WITHOUT the normal wet/dry vac noise makes it less of a chore.

All the ProPack tools store in the unit and the size/shape makes it easy to store and transport, more like a large tackle box then a heavy duty wet/dry vac.

Even brought it to the in-laws house to cut crown molding, hooked right up to my Bosch 12" sliding miter saw bag port, this thing sucked up every bit of sawdust. No garage clean-up afterward.
