Can I mix & match different tires?
Hello, my 2006 X5, E53 4.8is needs new tires. A co worker gave me two tires that his son took off of a different car with about 100 miles on them, so they are relatively new. They are Pirelli P Zero Nero All Season in a 275/40R20 so they would fit in the front. I went online and looked for that same tire in a size 315/35R20 for the rear but Pirelli doesn't make that tire in that size. It looks like I have to get different tires in the rear. In my research I have found that everyone says we cannot mix and match tires on all wheel drive vehicles but the X5 comes from the factory with different sizes on the front than the rear. How is this possible if they are supposed to be the same size? I bought this X5 in November of 2020, used of course and it currently has Pirellis in the front and Continentals in the back. I could just buy the same tires for the back but I kinda wanted to keep all the tire brands the same. Can someone help me understand why we are not supposed to mix and match, even thought they come off the assembly line with the staggered set up? Also any suggestions on what tires I could get for the rear? |

Different tires on the front and rear are fine. Matching them all the way around is ideal for sure, but not always possible as you said. Just keep the diameters the same. For a 275/40/20 that would mean a 315/35/20 rear. More detailed answer below.
With the X drive all wheel drive having a ~1% tolerance in overall diameter you have to stay pretty similar front to rear. So, if you change from stock tire sizes in the front or the rear, you have to adjust the other end bigger or smaller to match. For example, I run 325/35/20 (736mm diameter) in the rear which means I have to run a 285/40/20 (736mm diameter) up front.

Thanks so much! I will either go with another Pirelli tires in the rear so that they kinda match or with a new set of the tires that are on there now, which are Continentals Extreme Contact. Thanks

No problem.
Both are good tires. I run Nittos in the front and Pirelli Pzeros in the rear on my E53 in sizes described above. On the F15 we run stock sizes, Continental Extreme Contacts in the rear (315/35/20) and Continental Control Contacts in the front (275/40/20). Took this setup off our E70 and have put about 20k+ miles on the setup with no issues. Tires still holding up nicely.

Crystalworks so I ended up ordering two Pirelli Centurato P7’s for the rear (315/35R20). Hopefully they pair well with the Pirelli P Zero Nero’s in the front (275/40R20), like a match made in heaven.

Wow I should have checked this forum instead of the general e53 forum as I had the same question as OP.
I JUST installed new Mich Latitude Tour HPs on the front late last summer and now the rears are toasted BUT Michelin no longer sells the Latitude Tour HPs in the 315 size... So I reviewed internet lore and consensus (based on tire company, vehicle.manufacturer & testing) was the same tread pattern SHOULD be used on AWD vehicles, as having different tread patterns could cause different traction. slippage of one set of wheels compared to the other axel set would cause AWD system to work harder or sometimes malfunction, at the extreme. I have a great Indy Mech who never steers me wrong so I called them and asked their thoughts and I was told essentially the same thing. They said there are a few factors at play. Not just tread pattern but rubber compound, similar sidewall feel also count. He said he would sell me a set of just rears that were closely matching my Lat Tour HPs but once I told him I could buy 4 new Nokians for just a few hundred more than just 2 Michelin's... He said don't be stupid and just.buy the 4 new Nokians. So I JUST dropped my PERFECTLY washed wheels (even removed every wheel weight and any road tar or old wheel weight stickers with Good Gone and the inside is brand new again) Even the tire dealer complimented on cleanliness of wheels (it's actually so I can see if they scratch my wheels up)...anyhow I am getting a new set of Nokian Z Line tires installed for JUST a little more than buying JUST 2 rear Michelin Pilot A/S 4's. And I can sell my new Front tires I just installed last late summer. Even the tread difference between the Lat Tour HP and new Pilot A/S 4 is quite different so I didn't want to chance anything. I hope to have a review of the Nokian Z Line in a month and 6 months and a year of ownership. Apparently they have a 65k km warranty and width is 0.2" wider than Mich Pilot A/S4 so a BIT more wheel protection and they are 11/32 as opposed to 10/32 of many other tires. That's a few more days of driving safer Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk

Nice. Easy decision to get 4 vs 2. Though the michelines are likely the better tire. If only be concerned with them being louder really as performance shouldn't be vastly different unless you track your x5.
FWIW I've run different tread patterns on my e53 for 25000 miles now. No ill effects. As long as rolling diameter is the same, the x5 won't care. Think about it, the OE staggered setup always had more traction in the rear vs the front. There's 40mm more contact patch. If the xdrive couldn't handle it, BMW wouldn't spec it with staggered setup.

I wouldn’t recommend doing it. Follow BMW Recommended fitment.
