Sorry but may be a little behind here...but why this car? Is it to compete with the Porsche and Aston four-doors coming out? Also are they really making it a 4 seater? So many questions....

With that being said, it is a hot whip.

I like it in concept. The shape reminds me of a SAAB five door from several years back. Expect some debate on the 4 seat limitation.

I would like to understand how this compares to the 5 series sedan (saloon, limo, etc). Is it intended to be wider/heavier/longer than the then-current 5 series if/when both are in production?

Yeah, I watched it, but I still don't get it. BMW can put a guy in a nice suit on TV and have him explain with a European accent why we need this car, but it seems like rubbish to me. This thing looks like a squashed X6 and only carries 4 people. Where is the functionality of that? BMW is trying way to hard to make the perfect car for every person and every occasion, IMO. Back in the day I used to get really excited when BMW launched a new model, but today I cringe because the vehicles have been very dissappointing. The scrapped the only new models that I actually liked such as the CS, M1, tii and so on. I can't wait for the next hideous crossover or people mover. That is all they are focused on these days.

Grandmas will love this car, "seating that is not too high like and SUV and too low like a car". Wow! Now that has got me excited.

Plus this segment is already served by the Toyota Venza, which also advertises a low step in height, spaciousness, flexibility and seats 5 people, so I don't think BMW is as creative on this one as they think they are.

The 4-seat is just an option. It will come in both 5-seat and 4-seat flavors.

It wil be offered in both 4 and 5-seats, so no debate.
It is based on next 5-series platform. The looks also give us hints of how the next 5-series, coming in spring 2010, will look like. I think it has more utility than a 5-series but less than X5.
Current 5-series is 191.1" in length 5 GT is 196.8" in length. So around 5.7" longer. F10 5-ser will also be longer than E60. And its 2" wider than E60.

Weird to say the least. It looks like some other car, I just can't figure out which one. Maybe the mating of a Mercedes CLS and an AMC Eagle? The proportions are completely wrong. Oh and too bad the trunk lid doesn't just swing wide open until it touches the roof. Horrific choice of exterior color, but at least it compliments the interior color scheme with those seat panels that remind me of the wood body panels of Clark Griswold's station wagon in Vacation. Ugliest rims on a BMW in 10+ years, but at least rappers won't have to get them custom chromed.

I completely do not see the point of this thing. It should be called the BMW 5 series 'WTF' concept.

Strong work von Hooydork on this Chinese abortion; you're fired.

It isn't giant, it is 5 inches longer than a current 5 series, but the wheelbase is longer as well as the overall length. It is 3 inches taller. The real question will be how much heavier it is.

I don't think it is weird at all. It is a modern interpretation of a Rover 3500 SD1, or a SAAB 900 five door hatch.

The challenge that BMW has with the touring models, one of their best designs, is that too many Americans think it is a station wagon and that it evokes Clark Griswold. Tourings are cool, but the problem is that your neighbour will call it a station wagon. So, this is a halfway step between a sedan and a touring. Stylish and practical. I don't think they can claim to have invented the segment, just interpeted it on a modern platform.

At least this vehicle makes some sense. It is a RWD car, with a longer wheelbase than the sedan, and with a hatchback. Now they need to drop the PAS nonsense, as that just confuses the issue and makes people think of this as a crossover. It isn't a crossover.
