Wow, 12/18... that's some guzzling! My E39 M5 is rated at 14/21, and probably weighs at least 400 lbs more than the M3 will weigh, has almost the same power and a lot more torque. What gives?

Ah, one possible explanation is if any changes were made to EPA testing procedures as it has been rumored... http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005...hanging_wa.php
... more agressive driving, more AC blasting, etc.

Sunil/Josh or others, anyone know if an M3/M4 sedan will be released?

I think you will find that the EPA test procedures have not changed.

The test in use now has been around for decades, and for the last twenty years or so has had an arbitrary 'fudge factor' applied to make it more realistic (22% reduction in EPA raw highway mileage data, less for city)

The test is so far off base that turning the air conditioner on as is being proposed will have next to no effect. They need to move to a more realistic driving cycle (maybe more than 48 mph as is used now for highway), and simulate the typical idling time for congestion.

All that aside, the M5 real-world fuel consumption is in that range, so why would the new M3 be any different? Isn't it 80% of the V10 from the M5?

Jeff. that's the EPA published figures for the E60 M5 also but in REAL WOLRD, it's a lot worst. try 8-10mpg COMBINED!

Yes, I have heard the talks about it, cannot confirm yet if it will be called M4. But we know that there will be a 4-door version of ///M3.

Yes, I believe you. I do think there is an element of 'use the power, pay the price' and if driven ridiculously slowly, the M5 could do a lot better. Having said that, I know you aren't slowing down anytime soon, and I am sure I wouldn't either. Still love your tag line, #1 OPEC supporter.
