Question dealer says can't drop top via key fob

To those of you with convertible 3-series vehicles, i'm confused: the manual says that if you press and hold the UNLOCK button on the key fob, then after a few seconds it will transform the car into "topless" mode, provided that you continue to hold the button during the entire process.

However, at BMW of San Diego, they said that such a feature canNOT be programmed and is in fact NOT an option, contrary to what the manual says.

Meanwhile, my buddy up at Sonnen BMW in Marin says that it definitely SHOULD be possible, although HE says you need to hold the button for a ridiculous THIRTY SECONDS or so.

Thoughts?

I would really love to activate this feature as it would be just awesome to be walking to the car, and have her top off and ready to go by the time i get to her

No personal experience but there is a company www.tvonnav.com that was releasing a module called itop they also have one called iwindows and a rain sensor that integrates too.

check with them..

as far as I can recall the best you can do on the E46 convertible is to get the windows rolled down using the key fob.

how many times do you click unlock?
IIRC, i click unlock the first time, to unlock the driver door. then second time to unlock passenger door. then i click and hold the third time, and the top automatically comes down. (this is on a 04 Z4)

you can also try this and see if it works. put the key in the door keyhole. turn the key to unlock and hold that position (at 3'oclock) and the top should come down too.

good luck

no no no... you can drop the top by putting the key in the key hole and holding unlock. Not by pressing the remote button and holding for 30 secs. It's a safety feature.

yeah i heard about the keyhole feature ......but that seems sort of defeating the purpose. strange that you can do it on the Z4 but not on the M3. i wonder why...... anyway thanks guys

You can do it on a Z4 after an early 04 build. I think it was April, but I can't remember exactly. My 2004 Z4 was built in Dec 03 and I missed it by several months. The vehicle software can not be updated, unfortunately.

On my car, I can lower the top with the key, from outside, as Josh says, but not on the key fob.

There are a few aftermarket solutions, and I am sure they would work on the M3 as well. The one I looked at was a module that converted the one-touch key fob signal to a continuous sequence signal, so that you didn't have to hold the button. On the factory version, there is an apparent problem that when the roof is half up or half down it can block the signal and stop the process.

I didn't know about the kit listed above, but if you look on the Z4 boards (Roadfly, Bimmerfest, etc) and search you will find lots of references. I always thought it would be neat, but I didn't care enough to go buy the kit.

Jeff

My buddy has an '04 E46 M3 convertible (May 04 built, I believed). I've seen him opened all windows and then the convertible top by holding onto the unlock button of the key fob. So, this feature is indeed possible on an E46 vert. What's your built date?
