Ahh, who said BMW's were not safe? One model failed one test. Not to mention the engineering principles are completely different.

Audi, BMW and Merc all have different aproaches that lead to different atributes being favored in various degrees. BMW favor design and handling somewhat over safety. Audi might do it the other way round, while Merc forego the handling somewhat. Those very differences are what give these cars their unique feels.

I remember you dissing the plastics a few months ago When I was looking for a convertible, the IIHS rating wasn't out yet, so I looked on EuroNCAP for the rating. It got a perfect rating. http://www.euroncap.com/home.aspx

All I have to say is if somehow you could forcast the future and new for a fact that you were going to get into an accident on a given day and there was no way to avoid it or even just stay home what would you choose to drive.
If you had a Kia and A 5series in your driveway. Would anyone here really take out the Kia that day. F#$k that. My ass would be in the 5 series in a second. I was in a pretty serious accident 2 years ago in an E53. It was a 5 car accident on the highway and I was in the middle. Very hard hit. Me and my 2 passengers walk away without a scratch. The other 4 cars had about 30 passengers all together because one was a E350 van with like 20 people in it. almost every passenger in the other cars were seriously injured. most were taken away in an ambulance. It was an ugly day. They had to pry off the E350 from my X5 because they got stuck together. Even the passengers in the lexus suv got hurt and they took half the impact I did. That is why I only drive BMWs. Also Some guy I know in a E39 5 series was rear ended on the highway when he was stopped in front of a rest area. He had his baby in a car seat and he was in the driver seat. The car was totalled no injuries to him or the baby. BMWs are safe I dont care what anyone says.

kind of off topic, but a relative of mine was driving her 1991 Ford Explorer down a New Mexico highway (rural), when she rounded a corner and was faced with a sedan parked half-on half-off the road, and they weren't smart enough to put their hazards on. In order to avoid hitting the car, she cranked the wheel hard, and rolled three times. The Explorer was totaled, but she was fine. The next car she bought was a Volvo station wagon.
And that's why safety is my absolute #1 priority. Granted, an X5 with stability control won't roll like that, but there are always accidents that are unavoidable, especially red light runners that t-bone crossing cars, and that's why the 5-Series's rating is so dissapointing.
