Ahh, who said BMW's were not safe? One model failed one test. Not to mention the engineering principles are completely different.

They already are - it's not like they are failing crash tests left and right. But - why aren't they the safest? Because that would add expenses and development time. From a business perspective it makes sense to compromise somewhere, in order to get a competetive product out in a timely manner. Hard to fault them for that, no?

Audi, BMW and Merc all have different aproaches that lead to different atributes being favored in various degrees. BMW favor design and handling somewhat over safety. Audi might do it the other way round, while Merc forego the handling somewhat. Those very differences are what give these cars their unique feels.

2 Have now, the 5 and the 3 convertable, at that is unaccepable, esp when a 2004 Saab 93 convertable got a PERFECT rating, I do not know what BMW is doing but it is not enough

I remember you dissing the plastics a few months ago
When I was looking for a convertible, the IIHS rating wasn't out yet, so I looked on EuroNCAP for the rating. It got a perfect rating.

Again all IMO.
That's my point. A side impact score in one test doesn't define the safety of the car, you need to consider dynamic safety as well as passive. The outstanding handling/braking/stability control is a safety feature. What people should be asking is "why can't BMW design an E60 that does well in the IIHS side impact sledge test", not "why can't they build a safe vehicle".

IMO this test is very accurate and simply comparing "crash reports" is not as there are bound to be far less luxury cars then average cars on the road, therefore changing the percentage and proportion in results.
I would expect normalized statistics, comparing injury rates in similar classes of vehicles over more than a year. As percentages there would be comparable stats. While this wouldn't allow a purchaser to compare new models directly (as there would be no data yet) one could make a decision based on the track record of a manufacturer, assuming that similar thought was put into their other models. Not perfect, but much more data than a single lab test.

Safety has many factors. A vehicle with perfect crash ratings but takes 50% longer to stop or flips over when doing emergency maneuvers isn't a safe vehicle overall. I don't know the specs on the Kia but given the choice of making an emergency maneuver in a Kia or 5 series when my life is on the line I know which one I'd choose.

All I have to say is if somehow you could forcast the future and new for a fact that you were going to get into an accident on a given day and there was no way to avoid it or even just stay home what would you choose to drive.
If you had a Kia and A 5series in your driveway. Would anyone here really take out the Kia that day. F#$k that. My ass would be in the 5 series in a second.

I was in a pretty serious accident 2 years ago in an E53. It was a 5 car accident on the highway and I was in the middle. Very hard hit. Me and my 2 passengers walk away without a scratch. The other 4 cars had about 30 passengers all together because one was a E350 van with like 20 people in it. almost every passenger in the other cars were seriously injured. most were taken away in an ambulance. It was an ugly day. They had to pry off the E350 from my X5 because they got stuck together. Even the passengers in the lexus suv got hurt and they took half the impact I did.
That is why I only drive BMWs.

Also Some guy I know in a E39 5 series was rear ended on the highway when he was stopped in front of a rest area. He had his baby in a car seat and he was in the driver seat. The car was totalled no injuries to him or the baby.

BMWs are safe I dont care what anyone says.

kind of off topic, but a relative of mine was driving her 1991 Ford Explorer down a New Mexico highway (rural), when she rounded a corner and was faced with a sedan parked half-on half-off the road, and they weren't smart enough to put their hazards on. In order to avoid hitting the car, she cranked the wheel hard, and rolled three times. The Explorer was totaled, but she was fine. The next car she bought was a Volvo station wagon.
And that's why safety is my absolute #1 priority.
Granted, an X5 with stability control won't roll like that, but there are always accidents that are unavoidable, especially red light runners that t-bone crossing cars, and that's why the 5-Series's rating is so dissapointing.
