BMW Gran Coupe confirmed as 6 series sedan

BMW Gran Coupe Concept confirmed for production as 6-Series

BMW has confirmed the Gran Coupe Concept has been approved for production. Design will be shared with the new 6 Series Coupe.
Speaking at an event in Munich, Klaus Draeger, a member of BMW's Board of Management, stated the GCC will become a 6-Series "four-door coupe." While he didn't go into specifics, he hinted the car would launch in late 2012.

To be marketed as the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, there are several different engines which will be offered: two petrols, two diesels, a hybrid, and an M version. This means we can expect a 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS) 3.0-liter six-cylinder, a 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) 4.4-liter V8, a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel with 204 hp (152 kW / 207 PS), a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel with 245 hp (183 kW, 248 PS), a hybridized 3.0-liter petrol with a 54 hp (40 kW / 55 PS) electric motor, and a twin-turbo V8 with 555 hp (408 kW / 563 PS) to 570 hp (425 kW / 578 PS).

Besides talking about the production GCC, Draeger mentioned BMW has designed and built a 6-Series Shooting Brake. It hasn't been green-lighted, but market evaluation studies are currently underway.

Awesome, that's what I figured they'd do when I saw they were planning a 4 door 6 series. Panamera watch out, 4 door M6 is coming for you!

I can see the gangsta wannabes and celebs with more money than sense,
lining up to be first on their "block". If I won one, it would be traded the
same day, but everyone has their own bag.

Funny MD, reminds me about a certain famous rapper customer we have... When the E65 came out he said 745 is what its all about. Then said later in another rap song that 745 wasn't nothing and if you didn't have a 760 you didn't have shit......... at which point he had his 745i rebadged as a 760i.

I'm trying to understand the market for this...unless it's a pricing strategy by BMW, as much as i love the design, it just doesn't make much sense, imo. The M3 sedan failed, there's the M5 and 750/760 sedans...i assume their target demo is somewhere in between...

I already love the looks...perhaps a test drive would seal the deal

As a current 6 series owner, I'm not sure where this fits in the lineup. It will be hard to slot this below the 7 series. If that happens, it will kill 5 series sales and we know that the 5 and 3 carry the BMW line. This will be a interesting developement....can't wait to see this unfold.........Phil

I think it looks great.

I don't see this car taking too many sales away from any current BMW model, including the 5 series. Base price for the 528i and 535i are about $45-$50k, respectively, which is the bread and butter of 5 series sales. I wouldn't think that many people shopping entry to mid level 5's are going to be willing or able to spend 6 series money on a car. Base 6 series prices are currently $30k over the base 5 series. It may take a few sales from the top end 5 series, but probably not enough to do any harm. Then you have the 7, which starts at about $70k. Once again, I would think that people shopping 7's would not be interested in the much sportier and smaller gran coupe. The coup-ish design of this car will set it in a catagory all by itself, imo. Sort of like the Mercedes CLS.
