I did back to back tests on the hills, in the snow, with our 325xi, X5, X3, and 535i. Never ran the Z4 in snow. It was no contest, on the same hills (we lived in the snow belt, on the side of a mountain). I should qualify that the i with winter tires won't necessarily back up a snow covered hill better than the awd. Can't beat the physics of weight transfer. Just think, you can have better mileage, better handling, less cost, and in winter you can pull past the xi. You can get a manual transmission. You just have to change tires twice per year. Buy an extra set of wheels and it is painless. Just sayin'.

Agreed. I had Blizzaks on my turbo Saab years ago and that thing was unstoppable in the snow. The only problem was I could not wait to get them off once the snow had melted due to the harsh ride/sound.

If the lugs, the blocks on the edge of the tread, are all the same dimension then you get noise, because they set up a harmonic. If they are different sizes then they are much more likely to be quieter. Modern tires use this feature to provide traction and low noise.

Turns out we have decided to settle for a 2011 328i xDrive. We found one that has everything SHE wants. I have a hard time buying an E90 when the F30's are out. Guess I just need to get over myself and remember the old adage "happy wife, happy life".
Now on to my search to replace my my aging E53.
