First time poster/ thinking about an X5M

I'm completely uninspired by my current daily driver. I've been looking around and the X5M seems like an amazing alternative to my mom-mobile. I can't afford a new one but I see some of the '12 vintage that are within reach. Having never owned anything like this before, what considerations aside from the obvious (gas mileage, higher maintenance and repair cost, insurance cost etc) should be considered? Any issues that plague this particular year? The one I'm looking at is a fully loaded '12 with 30k miles. They're asking $41k. Does this seem in line?

I truly appreciate any and all feedback in advance.

Derek

Welcome to the forums. I generally find there is not a lot of X5 M action on any boards....

So I've owned 2x E70 X5's. A 2008 4.8i and currently a 2011 X5 M. My 2011 I purchased in March with 40K miles on it and it had every option possible. Rear entertainment, soft close doors etc.

I'm just going to state, SUVs are not sports cars, if you want a sports car an X5 M is not a replacement for one. A top heavy, overweight SUV ridding on 20" rims is never going to handle as well as a sports car. But with that out of the way I enjoy driving it more than any SUV I've ever driven. ITs a great luxury vehicle with real sporting capabilities, and it is probably the ultimate confidence machine at high speeds. ut it is not my daily driver, I enjoy my 2011 335D which is modded far more for fun and economical than my X5M. I generally get about 12-15mpg driving around town and on the freeway.

As for major problems, I've had none. I would recommend an extended warranty as they are expensive vehicles to repair if you don't diy. Also beware of the M tax, I find a lot of folks want to up charge you because of the M badge. However, there is no replacement for the X5 M.

General problem areas are injectors which are warrantied to 12yr/120K. The cars eat batteries, so I put mine on a charger at least 1x a month and if its sitting for more than a week. It needs 30K spark plug changes, and tires wear fast, and all the typical X5 E70 problems. Coolant lines, etc. No valve stem seals thankfully.

In march of 2017 I paid less than 33K for my 2011 with 40K miles. I think 41K for a 2012 with 30K miles seems high, but these are rare cars and a lot depends on your local market and conditions. Mine was in perfect condition inside and out and still smells new.

You stole that car, castle!

dchilds, while I wish it wasn't the case since xoutpost has been invaluable to me during my E53 ownership, you'll find far more traffic on xbimmers.com, N54Tech has a little traffic as well if you ever go with the JB4 piggy.

Yeah I got very lucky on my X5M.

There is a little bit more to the story however on the price..... I had been looking for a newer X5 for a while, and had looked at some X5M's. I was checking the used car ads daily in the Eastern Texas region (houston, dallas, san antonio, austin, lake charles). When I saw the X5 M I purchased at an Autonation Toyota Dealer near my house for 32K. So I jumped on it, went to the dealer and they had not even peeped the car yet for showing. I told them I was highly interested.. This was after testing a 2010 for 29K with 80K miles that was tired at my local BMW dealer.

Anyway a week later when the car had gone through detailing, replacing brakes, tires, etc. They finally let me drive the car. While test driving I noticed the dealer had changed the "fixed" price to 36900K. Autonation being a one price dealer said we don't negotiate. I told them I wanted the original asking price and they honored it. So you could say I got a great price on a really nice car because of dealer error.

They also replaced my turbo coolant lines, rain tray, and brake pads with oem pads as part of our purchase agreement. The Toyota dealer had put on aftermarket pads with very poor bite that made the car's brakes feel spongy. So I can say I've been happy with the purchase. I also purchased an extended warranty for 3yr/36K miles from the purchase date/milage, after reading horror stores of N63s self destructing, and my own experiences with my diesel BMW.

I just bought a 2012 with 50k for $32k black on black, happy with the purchase.
Mine has everything except the rear seat entertainment and the aircon seats, my e53 4.4 has the comfort seats, I love how they contour.
However not having the Luxry seat package doesn't bother me when it comes to this ride.

Couple questions for you if you don't mind.
Where did you get the warranty from, Toyota? How much?
Did you have your injectors replaced under CCP/BMW or were they done before hand, did you get a DMI from the dealer on service work?
Have you gotten airbags replaced yet?

Well that's a long story as well on the warranty, and some breach of contract issues by Autonation. Anyway I have a Toyota Gold extended warranty. Yes toyota covers BMW's I verified with my local BMW dealership and they said they have a few folks with that warranty and it never caused them any issues. I negotiated a $0 deductible for automation dealers/$100 for any dealer. So that I could take it to the BMW dealer closest to my house (nearest auto-nation BMW is about 50 miles away). Its a 3yr/36K mile warranty that covers everything on the car except infotainment, hybrid batteries (not really a concern) and by exclusion certain wear items like brake pad, wiper blades, etc. I believe I paid $2995 for the warranty on my 2011.

Honestly I've had only 1 minor issue with the car which was a CCV house that crumbled, and I just bought another one from the dealer (before I found it was covered by BMW recall) it was $68. Oh and a burned out angel eye bulb which I replaced myself for $7.

I also had bad turbo coolant lines replaced by the dealer, another minor repair.

There is not a CCP to my knowledge on the X5 M's. The CCP only applies to the N63 engines. However, BMW has extended the warranty on injectors on the S63 to 12yr/120K miles. Mine has had all the injectors replaced under warranty before I purchased the car. I think at 38K miles. It also had the park plugs changed at 30K miles, which is handy.

I'm not familiar with DMI? If you mean performed maintenance and repairs, I got that from my service advisor which is why I knew what work had been performed/when on injectors etc.

Nope not had the airbags done. Same deal on my 335d as well. Last I checked with the dealer they had a replacement, but put a stop install on the M airbags due to a defect so where back on hold for replacements (but this was in July).

BTW I do plan to change all of my lower end fluids over the winter (too hot now). The Xfer case, front and rear diffs, transmission. Mainly due to age not milage. Plus I want to keep after them as I use this as a tow vehicle (its my company car).

Thanks for the reply! Good to know, DMI, dealer maintains, or what you said performed maintenance, same thing. I know mine has had the drive shaft done under warranty recently as well as coil packs is what's listed on the carfax.
Carfax isn't the most reliable and this particular one spent time in Canada.
First thing on my list today is to go to the dealer so I can get a more complete list of repairs and service history.
Try setting an appointment for bags and injectors if needed and als order another key as I only have one, plus get the missing key deleted out of the system. This will be a company rig for me as well!
I love the 335D!! My buddy has one and it's as fast or faster then my E36 M3, not as much fun but an awesome car!
My E53 (2006 4.4) only has 44k on the clock but it sat for years before I bought it, I did diff fluids as well. Lucky for me I have a buddy who owns his own shop (bmw mainly) and is a bmw master tech so I got to be there for the diff service.
Both front and rear had more fluid come out then you could put in.
The rear looked great! The front was darker and looked like it was neglected.
That being said if I remember right, I think is listed as lifetime and the other at like 100k. Could be wrong but either way I know I ether called for service but I am glad I did it!
When I financed this they said they couldn't find anyone who offers a warranty for this car, I don't know if I can get it 3rd party from another dealer but I'll check around.
As far as I know there is no CCP, I just said that as most X5 owners are familiar with it and the injectors and fuel pumps are one of the larger items on the CCP so it's kinda the same but not, it is 100% related though.
I am curious to see what BMW will tell me today, I have two dealerships to choose from here and know a bunch of people in the car world here as well so hopefully I won't have any issues.

Did yours come with a hitch or did you add it? If you added it what parts did you use and how does it look, cost, tow rating? I'd like to add one to mine but I really love the way her butt looks!

I just found a wrecked E53 4.8is with tow package at a local wrecking yard and got everything for $85!!! module/harness/hitch/bumper core! Haha! They had no idea! Did the install in my drive way in about 1.5 hours, beer included!

Thanks again for the reply, there aren't a lot of X5M owners around to talk to about their experiences so any input is greatly appreciated! 🍻

Great minds think a like :-) X5M is a perfect company car and an excellent tow vehicle.

Hmm, I'd check a credit union or another dealer to see if they can sell you a warranty. My big saga with Autonation wasn't that they couldn't sell me a warranty but after the contract was signed wanted to tell me they couldn't sell me a warranty at that price and wanted to change the price after the sale. But we did finally reach terms on the extended warranty. The actual underwriter is Continuous Customer Care. GS Administraors Inc, 1345 Enclave Parkway, Houston TX 77077 1-799-833-8443. As always shop around there are huge price differences. My Master Mecahnic says the actual price on one for an M is $1800 (if you believe them).

Generally I'm not a big fan of extended warranties, in fact this is the 1st ever I've purchased on a used car. But given the expense of the car and the horror stories I've ready on the closely related but not the same N63 I decided to get one. Normally,I look at Edmond True cost to own for 5 years and just save monthly the expected repairs and maintenance costs in a fund. If I don't spend it, its a down payment on a new car. BTW I'm not super worried about this engine self destructing like the N63. One of the biggest issues with the N63 is very high operating temps which degrades all the engine seals. Normal operating coolant temp is 105-108c. The S63 has a low temp thermostat which keeps the engine at around 93c. This makes a big difference in component longevity.

My X5 M did not come with a hitch. I had a BMW E70 hitch installed by my indy mecahnic. After having done hitch installs 3 times in the last 5 years, I decided to pay someone ;-). Plus he can do the coding etc. The E70 BMW hitch inludes wiring harness, hitch and template for a small bumper cut at the bottom for clearing the hitch. Its not a big deal to me.

The official US tow rating is 6000lbs with 600lbs tongue weight. In Europe they list the same car as capable of 7700lbs, but the max tow speeds in Europe are lower (generally 55mph max) than the US and as such Europeans typically run lower tongue weights. Where I live highways are generally 75-85mph and I like to tow at the speed of semi's around 65-75mph.

I have a 23ft Flagstaff Microlite 21DS which weighs about 5000lbs typically, and has ~500lbs of tongue weight. I use an anti-sway weight distribution hitch and the X5 M tows beautifully. I would never say you can't tell the trailer is back there, but its very relaxed and easy to tow with. I also get generally good gas mileage around 9.5-10mpg while towing. I don't have pictures at the moment of the hitch. I can snap a few if your really interested (I keep the X5 M garaged in my company storage shed, so its not at my house).

Great! Thanks for all the info, I feel the same way about S63 vs N63, generally about all M cars if I am going to say anything at all.
My 96 M3 has 247k on it and I beat the piss out of it.
It's been a great car, my experience has been that in general any way.
The injector and High pressure fuel pumps are identical to the N63 so I am glad they have them replaced and covered under warranty.
Also the foot well module!
The injectors, Highpressure fuel pumps and foot well module are all now covered with the first 10yr/120,000 mile warranty from the first in service date.
I got the run down in my full history, the injectors were changed 15k ago, the fuel pumps have not.
Drive shaft and a couple coil packs have been done.

Drivers air bags are available now, passenger ones still do not have an ETA.

I already felt good about my purchase but feel even better today, I went and talked to the dealer that took it on trade as it seemed questionable why it looked like the Toyota dealer sold it, brought it back into inventory and then sent it to auction.
They didn't sell it, someone messed up and put it on sale with open recalls.
They told me their new policy is to not sell anything with unresolved open recalls that don't have remedies available.

Explains why two Toyota dealers I've seen that got these into inventory wholesaled them with low miles instead of selling them.

Thanks for all the replies!

Hoping the Toyota dealer finds the other key too, I bought a spare today and it was $305 with the metal key, they sell them separately!

Did you buy the Toyota Maxcare or a different warranty and how has it treated you so far?

Thanks
