M mode is a button on the steering wheel changes the throttle response, opens the exhaust up, and can enable or disable DSC (dynamic stability control), the M-mode specific heads up display (if optioned), and EDC (electronic dampening control) 'shocks' via your setup in the iDrive control panel.

  • In effect, DSC is the handling nanny - it allows you to drive the X more aggressively eg sliding, etc. Chevy calls it active handling.
  • EDC is dampning control - normal or sport mode for your suspension.
Transmission options:
  • Standard 'Drive' - just like the E53 - plodding along - comfort mode.
  • Sport mode - like the E53, holds gears a bit longer based on your personal driving. Will upshift at redline.
  • Manual mode - shift manually - won't upshift for you.
  • Paddle - shift manually - won't upshift for you.
At least that's how I understand things
Got it. So essentially the transmission options are utilized by the driver no differently than the E53, except the paddles can now take the place of the shift knob in manual mode. And the 'M' function (as you describe it) is a whole different setup, programmable independently of your transmission choices. Actually, if it's anything like the M3, the 'M' mode should be highly customizable? Keep playing with the M mode and let us know what other gems you find.

The paddles are extra.

You can still manually shift - like you can in the E53 - with the right hand shifter - sport mode/up or down.

There are 4 M-Mode options to 'tweak' - indicated above. It's not like the SMG settings in the M3/M5. That's a good thing

Launch control is something else to play with, but available only after the dealer programs it in (post break in).

nice , i also like the white a lot

i have a question about your roof rails . i am getting the hardest time getting my dealer to admit they forgot them or something like that . i have been getting every story in the book so far besides "we will make it right". did your car come with them or were they put on at the dealership ? i just now signed for my car and the 3m tape i purchased is being applied as i type , so i have to figure out what the deal is with the rails asap...

I really like the white in the X5M. But you would think for $100K BMW would have thrown in a aluminum gas and brake pedal.

Yes, you would think that.

You'd also think they would use real carbon fiber and aluminum trim. Not.

Even without those items, it's still a nice play to be sitting when you're exercising the 555 ponies

I drove the X5M but it was just a quick drive around the block, down the stretch and back to the dealer. It was over lunch time traffic and the sales guy was with me! So I didn't really get a 'feel' for how it drives. I know it surely felt different than my 4.8i and the steering had a lot more interaction. My Current active steering even with dynamic handling feels like it has more play. I didn't get a good chance to take off from a stop light! Does it go like a bat out of hell or does it pick up speed as it slowly lifts it's weight? The Cayenne Turbo felt like the latter. It didn't exactly blast off the line, rather effortlessly pick up speed really fast...

Next time tell the sales guy that you can't test the car till you hit the highway. Sales guy should know that around the block is not for ///M cars.

Haven't really nailed mine yet - 125 miles.

My brief excursions to 5500 rpm lead me to believe it will not have the lag/delay of the Cayenne.

At < 4.5 0-60, she's going to go like hell under WOT in M mode
