That's just ridiculous...imo no VP, CEO, or Chairman has the right to tell an employee what they can and cannot drive to their place of work without valid cause. So what was the cause?

I work for in the auto insurtry and we dont carry the brand. Also because of the "message" it will relay to the people under my job title. I am young, single, no kids, not many other responsibilites so I can have no trouble affording it, even though others in my position would. Like Corima said earlier, its just asset allocation. However in their eyes perception is reality and it "looks" like I'm making to much. Ironic thing is its just a time off and weekend car anyhow, I don't bring it to work, and never intended on it. I learned a long time ago that life isnt always fair or politically correct. So whatever, it doesnt phase me.

Perhaps i've been spoiled in my industry but i got a bit angry just reading your text...At least you have a good attitude about it and you have another vehicle to drive to work still think it's bullshit though.

Probably subconsciously the Ferrari doc. Why? cause you know he's making bank which means, he must be good.

Image perceived is image achieved and it's good to show success to promote new business. Unless we're talking about gaudy displays of wealth which I don't really see an ///M car as a symbol of.
I completely agree with your statement. I work in real estate development, and quite honestly people I have to deal with do look at what you have when judging you.

Like your Camry and Ferrari metaphor, who would your trust more? Its pretty clear the person with the Ferrari in the same field knows what he's doing otherwise how do you afford such a car.

In another perspective, if you're working under someone else but they're paying you enough to allow you to be able to afford the car you're driving then they have no right to tell you you can't drive it. Let say you make 125k a year salary, its pretty clear you're making enough to lease a luxury vehicle. If you are making that type of salary, you're likely to have a college degree. Simply put, you didn't go through all the trouble with education to not live the way you want to when you could. Its not like you're driving a ricer.

Most of the people you describe probably won't know the difference. It's just another BMW to them.
Ditto. I have to very careful with my choice of briefcase as well

Maybe I should dump the Tumi for a Samsonite.

career? What about when you try and sell your avg house in this economy and you can't hide your BMW - the only vehicle that works at the moment?

This is why I own several cars. I do not take my BMW to anyplace where my finances are to come in play (negotiating prices for services) because as soon as anyone sees it they start making assumptions.

Same thing goes for job intereviews and the first few weeks on a job (I change jobs every 6 months or so). I wait until I know the people I am working with before I bring out the toys - not that I care what people will think, but because I don't need any unnecessary scratches and flat tires - yes, it happens.

Its ok, I show up to work in an M5 where everyone employed makes like minimum wage. I park far far far away but they know. Oh well. Stay in school and pay your dues.

I've thought about this as well. Frankly, you have to look at it like this. People are jealous of people that have power and money, and you really can't help with either of that. My attitude is do what you think is right, don't worry about what other people think, and let God handle the rest.

Besdies, the universal reaction when people see my X6M is "What is THAT?". They don't know what it is. In fact, the ONLY person that ever said anything was when I was at the bar with some buddies and a salesman from the local BMW dealership saw it and wouldn't shut up about it, but that's it.

Do what you want. If people resent you because of the car you drive then you probably don't want to associate with them anyway. Life's too short.
