The dealers are counting on another 'me' in 1999. They know thier yearly allocation and how long they can sit on a model before giving up on the dream of selling to a sucker. Hey, it's a free market, let the buyer beware. Salespeople HATE an educated buyer! |

It depends on the market/area. Here in Southern California many dealers are still adding market adjustments in the range of 5-10k. It is a bit ridiculous, anyone should be able to negotiate below MSRP though.

loaded X5M in chicago
The salesman said they would deal. And if it is still sitting their in January, they could knock of a couple of grand.

I got $4,000 off MSRP on a new build X6M here in Dallas. Also, dealers are willing to let demos go for $1500 over invoice. ...just an FYI. |

Dealers in my part of the world will routinely give a $1000 off an ordered car.
Better ones will up it to $3,000-$5,000. I like to give my business to the ones that give a decent discount right up front and not play negotiating games. |

Those markups are there to discourage you from the idea that you should get a price under MSRP.
In other words, if you saw a price of 90K you would be temped to actually try to get the vehicle for 85K. But just by putting this sign on the car, they almost assure that you will feel that you didn't get poked in the rear when you pay MSRP. It is a good ploy by the dealers. If enough of you walked out as soon as you saw that add on sticker, they would stop doing it. But consumers are not that wise. This is how they were able to get 10K over MSRP for the first Miata's. People had to have it, so they paid what the dealer demanded. The next year, they sold for 13K or less.

Let's list the cars we have seen with outrageous dealer markups:
Acura NSX - first ones roped off in the showrooms, no test drives, no sitting in it! 1984 Pontiac Fiero - I remember +$2500 First Mazda RX7's - dealer told me "we can sell every one we get at +$2000 1992 Vipers First Corvette ZR1 How about the first BMW Z3's? |
