I don't know if the SRT will have better low-end torque...these turbos spool up very quickly. And auto cross? Who is going to autocross an SUV anyway? On real world roads and even on regular tracks, stock for stock, the M is faster.

M makes 500lbs of torque from 1500 to 5500rpm, an unbelievable figure. The SRT makes max torque of 470 at 3900rpm. Unless they mean the SRT makes more torque between 500-1000rpm they are wrong. The area under the curve for the M is by far superior to SRT
