Is BMW North America as inflexible?

BMW Canada has rejected my order for an X5M.

The message is zero flexibility. The choices are those on our web site. "We know better than you."

No BMW Individual leathers are available.

If you want Comfort Seats (Multi Contour Seats) we will not M badge.

I will be writing to the CEO in the new year to explain why he is loosing a 20 year customer.

So options
1) Order from a US Dealer,
2) Range Rover Supercharged, or
3) Mercedes ML63 AMG

BMW NA runs the US and Canadian divisions (North America.......). BMW does not allow deviations from their North American packaging systems. And absolutely, BMW will not let you have a model that is not sold in your country. Your only option is to buy an X5 M in the US and then import.

Really? I hadn't heard that. I always thought that BMW NA was just an overly lofty name for BMW US. Probably they couldn't use BMW US since they already used that name for their holding company.

BMW CA has a separate president (the outgoing one came from BMW Nordic in Sweden, the new one starting January 2011 is from BMW Italy). BMW CA is a subsidiary of BMW AG, and according to BMW's annual report is operated and reported on separately from BMW NA.

All this by way of saying that if the OP doesn't like the answer from BMW CA, don't bother contacting BMW NA in the US, write to BMW AG.

I think BMW NA is less flexible than BMW CA. Some models make it into Canada that aren't offered at all in the US.

The packages are built up differently in the US and Canada for the X5 models, but I suspect there are more restrictions on the M models.

While it won't help you order an X5M, I see that BMW CA is offering some Individual packages on the X5 50i. I don't see BMW NA offering those packages. Maybe you could consider a 50i, see if you can get the Individual options you want, and then modify it from there upon receipt?

Thanks JCL,

I had not heard that the new President of BMW Canada was coming from BMW Italy. Having worked there, perhaps he will be more flexible. I will postpone my decision until he has had a chance to look at his operation.

I had read it some months ago, but I just looked it up to be sure. I got it wrong. The one leaving BMW CA came from Sweden, and is going to BMW Italy. The one arriving is coming from Munich.

Not sure how that will impact you, but good luck.

Any change might be good. There have been some serious gaffs e.g. the HPFP recall not being announced in Canada. 20 years ago there was a dissymmetry of information. Thanks to internet fora such as this that is no longer the case. BMW Canada seems to act as if we the customers are not aware of what they are doing for customers in other markets.

I got my letter from BMW CA offering the extended 10 year HPFP warranty around the same time it was announced in the US.

If you are expecting that BMW Canada may be less arrogant and more customer centric with a new German CEO, you may be waiting a while, IMO.

Mine is a 2008 535. Not sure if the letter was only for the 2008, only for the 535, or only because I had failed one. I suspect your wife will get one too.
