Twin turbo I6 engine and a water-to-air intercooler on new M3
Just the Facts: •BMW is testing the new M3 with a twin-turbo inline-6. •This prototype features a water-to-air intercooler. •The new engine is predicted to produce more than 400 horsepower. SANTA MONICA, California — Every so often, prototype drivers and vehicle engineers have to open the hood, and when they do, spy photographers pounce. Especially when the hood being opened is that of the 2014 BMW M3. It has been known for quite some time that the 2014 BMW M3 would not carry on the current car's naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V8. Instead, BMW had to come up with something smaller and more efficient. And that likely meant forced induction. Rumors have been swirling about what form that engine would take: Turbo V6? Turbo inline-6? Supercharged V6? Each rumor had its own reasoning behind it, but the most talked-about prediction was a straight-6 with three turbochargers providing the boost. It sounded exotic at first, but then BMW unleased its 3.0-liter triple turbodiesel in the 550d. But now we have actual photos of the M3, and the engine bay tells a different story. We're not 100 percent certain, but it looks like this engine has a twin-turbo setup, mostly likely feeding BMW's 3.0-liter inline-6. Our in-house turbo expert also notes that this setup appears to have a water-to-air intercooler similar to BMW's larger-displacement twin-turbo V8s. The current N55 turbo I6 uses an air-to-air intercooler. The addition of an extra turbocharger should give this six enough punch to go well over the 400-horsepower mark. From Autoblog:
Horsepower in the F80 M3 and F82 M4 is said to be close to that of the E90/E92, which was rated at 414 hp. This contrasts with previous reports that had horsepower pegged closer to 450. It should also be noted that BMW has been known to underrate the horsepower values for its engines. That said, the new turbocharged straight-six will supposedly develop 100 more pound-feet of torque over the current generation, too. The 4.0-liter S65 V8 found in the E90/E92 M3 developed 295 lb-ft, putting the new engine's torque in the 395 lb-ft neighborhood. We can live with that. An equally interesting development regards the proposed weight of the new Ultimate Driving Machine. Apparently BMW is targeting the curb weight of the E46 M3. That older-generation Bimmer clocked in at about 3,400 pounds, while the E90/E92 M3 had grown to over 3,700 pounds. The 300-pound weight savings should come as welcome news to M3 purists, critical of the progressive weight gains from generation to generation. For those interested in the aesthetic of the next performance-Bimmer, the F80/F82 update of the M3 is claimed to feature a more aggressive look, highlighted by a power bulge hood and larger fenders. That styling direction should not come as much of a surprise, as the more aggressive appearance is customary to the M3 by now and matches what we've seen in spy shots. According to source, the F80 M3 sedan will debut first and come to market in early 2014. It will be followed by the M4 coupe, though exact timing was not revealed. |
