X5M Spartanburg Delivery, options, questions...

Greetings to All,

this is truly an awesome forum and I am very excited to have found it! I am new to the forum, but have been browsing through it for some time.

I need help from everyone here that have put in valuable input on their X5M's.

Here is my situation:

I am looking to buy a 2013 BMW X5M in late spring/early summer. I want to pick the car up at the plant in SC.

My questions are:

1. How much should I pay over invoice, since the dealer only has to put an order in for my car?

2. I live in southeastern US, so ordering from any dealer in the nation should not be a problem since they just need to put my order in. Who would be the best/least expensive dealer to order from?

3. Has anyone done the Spartanburg delivery and how was the experience?

I appreciate anyone's thoughts, input, criticism, opinion, etc...

Please, chime in!

Regards,

iMpower

I did the Spartanburg PC delivery few months ago. The experience was great and I will do it again. You will be picked up at the airport in a new X5 and stay at hotel at BMW's expense. Delivery day starts early and you depart for PC at 7:30 am. Once at PC we started with awesome time on track(in the same model car you pick-up, but not yours. I had the same color too), then a factory tour followed off-roading trip in X5/X3 followed by lunch and then again on track in a M5.

PC Delivery is a blast. I did it two years ago and will definitely do it again next year.

Thanks for the replies.

We are pretty much set on the SC delivery, just a matter of time.

Do you guys think that delivery at the factory gives me an advantage with the dealer of them not having to ship it to the dealer and all that?

Basically, the dealer just has to put the order in for me and that's as much work as they have to do.

My thinking is why should I pay anything over the invoice on the car, if all the dealer has to do is a couple of clicks on the computer to put my order in. And it doesn't really tie me to one local dealer if they give me hassle with the pricing, as I can call any dealer to have them place the order.

Your thoughts?

If you want 2013 model than you have to wait till August 2012 as model 2012 production ends in July 2012. 2013 also has some changes and is the last production year for current model E70 X5.

You can go to any dealer in the country. You probably will get better deals on 2012 models in August 2012 than on 2013 models. But you may get lucky and invoice is still possible.

The only downside, to getting from not your local dealer is they may not give a BMW loaner when you bring in for repairs, if that is important to you.

Our timeline of buying is summer of 2012 so I figure to go ahead and get the 2013 year model.

Besides, I really like those M performance options with the 21" wheels, M steering wheel, etc...
If these options are available on the 2012 year model sometime soon, then I'd definately consider getting a 2012 model.

It is going to be our family car, so my wife will drive it most of the time, but daddy gets to drive it too, you know, so the performance options are important!

I would try and buy it from the dealer that will be doing the servicing. Helps with the loaner car, but also gives you an advocate with BMW if you have any warranty issues. You only buy it once, but you will be having it serviced for four years.

Certainly I will do my best to try and buy from the closest dealer.

The problem is, the city where I live has no BMW dealer. Within the 250mi radius from my city (I guess I should call it town) there are 11 BMW authorized dealers with the closest being 91mi away, and farthest 235mi away.

So the choice, hopefully, shouldn't be too terrible with pricing.

Spoke today with one of the dealers about the timing of the building process. He said that it takes a regular X5 to be built in 5-7 weeks, and for an X5M to add another week or two.

So, basically, I need to count on about two months from the time I order the car to when I pick it up from Spartanburg.

That timeline seems about right...Or could be as short as 3-4 wks. Read somewhere(another forum) that all dealers have monthly allocation of the X5s from BMW USA. So if a dealer has not sold his monthly allocation, it will take shorter time while if u go with a dealer that has already sold his monthly allocations it would take longer...Not sure if this applies to X5Ms too. Then add the amount of time it would take to make it from the factory to dealer through distribution. Obviously if you are in the west coast it will take longer to get there....

When I put the order in my dealer found a car that was in "status 5"? Not sure what that was. He said something like: the car was allocated to a dealer but they did not want it anymore. Anyways it went into production 2 weeks after I ordered and should be at the dealer today . Total process took less than 4 weeks.

He said something like if he had not found that car, it would have taken couple of mnths to build it.

Good luck.
