1500 mile service

Hi all. Hope all of u had a wonderful holidays...

Anyways I hit the 1000mile mark on my SAV. The dealer when I talked to him did not know much about the 1500 mile service. The consensus here (when I asked the question in another thread) was to get it done. So could any of u guys tell me what exactly is involved in the 1500 mile service on the M?

Thanks in advance.

The previous version of the '1500 mile M service' doesn't seem to apply to the X, as it is more 'badged' than the previous M car iterations...not dissing your car, but the few posts here suggest it won't get any 'free service' or 'early service'.

Not sure I would dump oil/filter at ~1,500 miles on my dime, but it's your choice...

I think BMW has been cutting back on these things because they need to pay for it--I believe that the 1500 mile service is a good idea.. For the 150 bucks on an oil change, you can have piece of mind. Just my 0.05.

service manual

Happy Holidays to all!

You surely racked on those miles pretty quickly.

I am the type of person that follows the instructions according to the instruction manual, or, in this case, would be service manual.

If there is not an indication for it in your service manual, then I see no reason to think we are smarter than BMW engineers. Just my humble opinion.

Just like my wife's Honda Accord Hybrid. The manual says to service it every 7500mi. The dealer told me every 5000mi, and when I asked why, he couldn't give me a reasonable answer.

I think the days of every 3000mi oil changes are long gone, as the cars are more advanced now, and don't require such frequent oil changes.

So, what I am saying is, that I would not do it on my car if there is nothing to indicate such from the car or the service manual.

Interestingly the X5M is labeled under the M cars, not X5 on the www.bmwusa.com

Must be a real M car, but I'm sure the M5 and M3 purists would argue differently.

I try to keep it at 500miles/mnth(dont know how I came up with that number lol). So far I have resisted the tempation to rake up the miles on it. Its not my daily driver: would have had few thousand miles on it by now if it were. That SAV is too fun to drive, to be there sitting in the garage... lol

You have to ask yourself what would you lose if you did an oil change at 1500 miles? $100 is the answer. What would you gain ranges from nothing to getting shaved metal out of your oil and possibly longer engine life. the debate goes on, question is, are you willing to risk it to save $100?

I know the XM is not the same as other other M motors in that it does not use 10/60 oil. The S54 initially did not use 10/60 oil either, they changed the oil after a bunch of engines blew up in 2001. I also know it is not recommended in the manual. The issue is you want to be a potato and just follow whatever is recommended or use some common sense once in while. I owned every M3 before this X5 and always changed oil more frequently than say 15K and never regretted it. You seem to be getting your panties in a bunch, no XM owner is upset about anything, chill

I would pay out of pocket at 1500 miles and change the oil. You just broke in your engine, get all the particles out. Then drive it like ya stole it.

Isn't the oil filter supposed to filter all that crap out anyway?
