They sure have come a long way since the wall came down. It wasn't that long ago that most Russians were driving Trabants.

correction: a trabant was a "foreign" made car (german car) and as such was not freely available in the Soviet Union.
Soviet brands were

GAZ (21 and 24 and later 32 were sedans, also made "SUV" and big trucks), Chaika was GAZ-13, if i am not mistaken
Zhiguli (known in the West as Lada, models 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, i am not sure about 08 and 09, and 11), also Niva
Zaporozhets (used as a free give-away to handicapped people)
Moskvitch (403, 408 and 412 with assembly lines of AZLK and IZh)
Izh-Kombi (soviet SAAB look-alike)
ZIS - usually reserved for the power structures
Pobeda was i think a GAZ product, means Victory, a copy of a US Packard model...

oh, and in the Germany, there was a BMW plant that ended up in the East occupation side and East Germans were making the BMW knock-offs and called them EMW, because the place's name started with an "E" as opposed to "B" for Bavarian... I have to google that to see the exact info...

I hope folks who have been to Russia will pitch in:

It looks like these guys were racing on the MKAD - Moscow's Beltway, and the only time when it can be as abandoned as in this video, is on sunday night going to Monday morning... I drove on that road many times, and maybe the wide 20" on the SUV were not that good but the road is seriously tramlines, and changing lanes sometimes was a bitch...

But it was a nice race, and nobody got killed... this time...

Yes, you're right. Trabant was once the favoured transport of the East Germans. I stand corrected.
