Ticking when warmed up

Just got a 2005 X3 with 148K. Great shape. Runs perfect at start but when warm I get a ticking noise. Sounds like its up on top end like an injector. Also sounds like piston slap but wouldn't I hear that right away? Don't think it's lower end bearings from the sound.

Just got the car so not sure what oil is in it. I'm in Northern California so 30s at night and 50s in the day right now. What oil should I run in a 3.0?

For now get some
marvel mystery oil pour that in crank case...run with it for a couple of weeks then change oil to 0w 40...try it, out not totally necessary but try to stick with/look for "European" formula. Walmart would be my first stop.
oh! What's your oil level by the way!

Yes, I was thinking about the Marvel oil. I have a quart. I'm only down a bit but will probably add the quart. Never knew there was Euro oil? I did see it on Walmart. What's the difference?

Also just saw this on a post on the Walmart site: For BMW LL-01 applications we recommend Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40. Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W-40 does not meet the BMW specification. - Aly, Pennzoil Technical Information

Thoughts on oil weight comment?

Keep in mind that the engine ticking is common place for these engines. However, with regular oil changes (rarely do I go up to 8k miles mostly 7k) and proper quality oils (like you mentioned) and engine cleaning (BMW manuel says gas /oil additives are not needed)... at the start of my ownership my 05 x3 I would use stp only during long trips. All this over time (I've had the 05 for going on 5 years) has got my engine humming! There is stronger additives out there (I've got some techtron somewhere) anyways keeping that oil topped off is a plus...truthfully you can hurt the engine with too little oil or exceeding the required amount of oil I go for 7 quarts.
Even tho the oil is euro (iv tried many brands) my x3 doesn't really favour mobile1 but really does like the German Pentosen brand and that was 5w 30 but that stuff is $40 bucks for the 5 liter jug. Can't afford that, well I probably could but the car is 14 years old.
Don't get too caught up in this subject.... many do see:

Sound advice, it sure seems like something is gummed up/sticking. I'll try you 0-40 and MM. Thank you!
