Question Question about Stability Nannies

I have come across something I want to run by my fellow E83 owners. This is probably not new to those of you in the know, but I have found 3 different apparent driving modes accessible via the DTC button on the dash. The first mode as described in the owner’s manual is a single short button push of the DTC button. Per the manual “Maintain pressure on the button until the DSC indicator lamp lights up, but do not press for longer than approx. 10 seconds. DTC Dynamic Traction Control and DSC are deactivated”. Of course I immediately pressed the button for more than ten seconds and the DSC light goes out and the 4x4 warning light comes on. I am curious how or if this differs from the previous mode. Then I discovered that if you press the button again the 4x4 light goes out immediately when the button is pushed, but if you hold the button in at that point for I’m guessing about 20+ seconds and then release there is no indication on the dash but when released the button is dead (i.e. no reaction to any further pushes) and no indicator lights. This only resets when the ignition is cycled. My question is what exactly has happened? Is the vehicle in some other odd ball mode? I have not had a chance to take my baby to the off-road park yet to see if I can figure out exactly what is happening since I discovered this anomaly. I thought I might ask here to see if anybody can fill me in on this.
