3.0sd M Sport X3 tempted
So have been looking at the 3.0sd M Sport X3 face lift model has anyone had a test drive in one. A lot of folks say the ride is not great is that just because of the sport suspension is it much worse than the X5 ride. The 286bhp 0.62 in 6.6 seconds has me drooling. Any thoughts on folks who have driven the X3 speak now. not looking for info on the diesel because I know most of you guys will have petrol just on the ride and handling. I could forgive the ride a bit for the speed and torgue. |

I have an 06 Sport and find the ride very good. I went from a 00 328 w/sport and find the X3 better in some regards. I think that a lot of people get a little clouded to the fact that we are driving a suv, not a sport sedan, when they rate the quality of the sport package ride. I've driven both for extended periods of time and for my taste, I like the ride of the sport suspension far better than not.
I do wish that we could get the diesel here in the states though.

X3 rides firmer than the X5 from my experience. They softened it up in 2005 because the '04s ride very firm. You can hurt yourself in my 2004 non-sport X3 2.5i, especially in the back. Handling is great though.

I have 2006 3.0d 218 HP
I dont have the sport package and the ride is not very good for your back I would not recomment the sport suspensions. On plain surfaces and no sport suspensions my X3 can find a lot of bumps... |

Compared to the X5, the X3 is like driving a sports car (we have both an X5 and X3 in our family). The X3 handling is far superior, but the ride is firm (but not uncomfortable in my opinion, but it depends on the types of roads you drive on). Most people expect the ride of an SUV to be soft, but the X3 feels like a performance road car with a better view so you hear complaints about its ride simply because it isn't the soft, comfy ride they were expecting.
I say go for it. You'll love it. The bonus is it that it has more leg, head, and cargo room than the X5. |

Hi Fiona
I have the 2.0D sport with deleted sports suspension. Even with standard springs the ride is harsh - mine has the softened 2005 set-up too. It's bearable but occaisionally on UK roads can be uncomfortable. My advice is to test drive both sports and non-sports springs over a variety of roads. B-roads with poor or undulating surfaces are the worst. On balance, I'm pleased with the X3 and glad I bought it but the ride is still the worst thing about the car. X5's feel to my mind much heavier and slower - the X3 is far more sporty and nimble. The 3.0sd should be amazing ! |
