I think it has to do a lot with the Valvetronic and likely the fact your motor does not have to work quite as hard to maintain momentum. That recent consumption figure was recorded on a 65km stretch of interstate that involved crossing the Blue Ridge mountains. And a whole lot of high revs like this in 4th gear: As you can see, instant consumption was 13,6 l/100km and thats because I was careful on the throttle. If I maintained a 120km/h speed like on flat land, it would be more like 19 or 20 litres. That's the disadvantage of a less powerful motor on the highway; consumption can suffer because it's gotta work hard! |

I think weather plays a part as well. I topped off the tank in my 05 and had about 415 miles when full at 55 degrees F, now last sunday i filled up and had 355 at 22 degrees F.
I understand that i am not educating anyone here, but i think there are tons of factors that impact the mpg and i don't think dropping down a size on wheels would do that much. Is it a 6 spd MT?

We consistently get about 19 mpg with mixed city/freeway driving. On a road trip it's about 23-24mpg.

I have always done the plus 1 and 2's on previous cars and noticed the drop in MPGs , so I figure If I do the reverse I get increased MPGs, maybe not huge but certainly better than 15-16- city. On a nother note I have avg between 22-24 driving to the Carolinas with avg speed of 75+MPH with ac on and 5 occupants |

My '04 X3 2.5 started getting terrible mileage (15-16 city, 19-21 highway)...the dealer said everything was fine. With some research I found some posts regarding the seals in the Vanos unit. Well I did the seals and Voila, the car is getting good gas mileage again (19-21 city, 24-29 highway)!
The Vanos seal issue was resolved in the latest engine redesign ('06?) but was in all the dual vanos engines berfore then. Steve |

Was it noisy during start up? Or was it the slight sputtering/vibration , like foul plugs during warm up/start up?- which I notice every now and then on ours. I wonder if there is a TSB on this? hmmmm..... Beisan Systems Last edited by martz; 03-07-2009 at 10:13 AM. Reason: added a link on vanos |

Well I had two cars with issues. My 2000 528i would stumble and stall during warm up, and of course the dealer said nothing was wrong! I did the seals on it and it ran like new again! Then I started noticing poor gas mileage and a lack of low end torque with my X3...I also noticed on the highway in cruise the car hunted and downshifted more often...no doubt from the lack of torque. So when I looked up my 2.5 liter it was also on the list of engines that had the bad seals. I did the seal job and BAM the torque is back and the gas mileage was back.
The deal is BMW NEVER admitted to using the wrong material for the Vanos seals...and if a Vanos got bad enough to shoot a code they replaced the whole unit (for over $900). The catch is the new unit has the same stupid seals and they would start to fail after 10,000 miles or so. I brought this up to the service manager at my dealership...and they smiled and really didn't do anything. Sigh. You can read more about the problem and get the seals (for $60) here: Beisan Systems Now that I've successfully done two of these maybe I should open a Vanos seal shop here in New Hampshire!! 8^) -Steve |

Just got the x3 a few weeks ago and been on 1 road trip. Around town, getting ~16.5 in town... Ohio is kind of flat so not a lot of hills to pull.
On the road trip to Michigan I got about 21 mpg @ 75-80 mph. My cons1 is showing ~18 mph. Wheel size doesnt matter Weight does matter @ 2 tons she is a little heavy Correct tire pressure matters and is your best bet for gas milage. Transmission matters.... Just got rid of my 02 530i msport w/ 5 speed stick @ 2500 lbs. My cons1 consistantly showed 24.5 mpg for the same 3.0 inline 6.
