Is that ok to have different front and rear set tires on BMW X3?

I am wondering if it will not be a problem to use the same size tires but different brands on BMW X3. I got a pair of Pirelli Scorpion Zero 235/50/18 in front. I also got 235/50/18 BF Goodrich g-Force KDWS High Performance Tires which I'd like to install on rear wheels. Discount tires said that I cannot do that because it is AWD and tires have to be the same. Is any idea on why it might be a problem? Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks.

It's not a good idea to use different tyres front to rear. They may be the same nominal size but may be different in actual size. They may also have different grip characteristics. I'm not sure what the X3 owner's manual says but I know that the X5 manual stresses the important of using the same brand/size etc on all four wheels. You have a nice vehicle ... don't compromise it by mixing up the tyres. There may be some people here who have done this and will say "I've had no problems", but I think it's a dud idea.

Hi,

I purchased my X used last month and the stealership had to replace the rear tires in order for it to pass inspections but they did not replace the front ones as they must have just had enough tread to pass.
They threw a different brand of tire on the rears.
In the meantime I purchased a set of 20's for my X which are heavier and wider and I'm getting better gas mileage with the new wheels. Go figure.
I guess it really does make a difference if you're using two different brand/treads on your X. It could also be that the front ones were almost run down and the rears were brand new? I wouldn't think that it would make such a difference but the new wheels are proof.

Thank you for your post. Interesting observation. I only was worried if it can affect a differential or tranny since the tire guys said so.

If the tyres are different sizes that's a potential problem for your centre 'differential'. Tyres with the same nominal size should be close in real size but they do vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. More worrying is that different tyres can have different grip characteristics or water dispersal characteristics that can potentially affect handling and/or stability although the DSC system does give you a 'safety net' of sorts here. As I said earlier, not recommended by BMW and, IMO, a dud idea!

I agree, the best is to have the set of 4 tires. I will look for other pair of Pirelli's. It is sad that I already got BF Goodrich pair. I probably will try to sell them. Fraser, thank you for your concerns and advice. I am highly appreciate it.

You're welcome. Good luck with selling the BFGs.
