Trunk Release Sensor not working after Hitch was installed

I have a 2016 BMW X3 (x28i) and just got a hitch installed so I could attach a bike rack. It is a mechanical hitch (no electrical connections) and I got it installed at a U-Haul.

I noticed that after the hitch was installed, the hands-free trunk release stopped working. I suspect that somehow the hitch is covering up the sensor. Has anyone else run into this issue? Any solutions? I understand that I can use the keys or button to release the trunk, but would like to be able to trigger the sensor with my foot.

Thanks,
areo
