How much should I pay over invoice for an X3?

I am ready to purchase my first BMW and was hoping you more experience guys could give me some advise as to where I should start my negotiations with a dealer.

I’ve decided on a 2011 X3. I will order it fully decked out, and be paying cash. I will not be trading in my current car. I already have a buyer for it. It's in excellent mechanical condition, so I am not in a rush to buy. But, I am ready to purchase now.

Here are the specifics:
xDrive35i 3.0L 6-cyl. Turbo
Titanium Silver Metallic
Sand Beige Nevada Leather
Fineline Siena wood trim
Cold Weather Package
Convenience Package
M Sport Package
Dynamic Handling Package
Technology Package
Premium Package
Head-Up Display
Premium Hi-Fi System
Automatic High Beams
Smartphone Integration

$53,630 Invoice price
$58,400 MSRP
$56,691 Edmonds true market value

All prices include the $875 destination cost. The TMV also includes a $519 regional adjustment cost for Dallas/Fort Worth. I intend to walk into the dealership with an itemized printout of the invoice pricing.

Everything I've researched about negotiating only address buying a car off the lot with financing and trade-ins. I haven't found anything about ordering one from the factory or paying cash. I did find one site that said to offer $2,000 over invoice for a car costing this much.

I have stopped at a few dealerships, but only to ask questions. I've just given them my first name and no contact information. All things being equal, I rather buy from the dealership closest to my house because of a lower sales tax rate. I don't like the one salesman who's always talked to me whenever I stopped there. Is there a tactful way to see another salesperson?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

It will depend on the availability of the new model, ie what sort of allocations the dealers get. The post below this one suggests that there may be a wait of many months, and if so, then the price would be pretty close to MSRP.

If you want to work from invoice, try $1000 or $1500 over invoice and see what happens. You may need to try every dealer near you.

I also do cash purchases, usually without a trade. It is a simpler deal, you just want to know what they will take for the vehicle. If they can't readily get this model due to popularity, they are unlikely to be willing to deal, however. Also, to protect the published price often the manufacturers offer deals on financing terms, effectively lowering the price. If you aren't using their financing, and there are financing deals non offer, you need to ask what they are offering instead for cash purchases.

From the title of your post "How much should I pay over invoice for an X3?" I would say you're starting off on the wrong foot. Shouldn't you be asking "How much should I pay "UNDER" invoice for an X3?

After all paying less is always much better that paying more. So decide how much you want to pay and stick to your guns. It may take a little longer accomplish your task but
getting what you want and saving money is always a good thing.

I paid the $12 for the consumer report auto invoice price report which also provide access to a web site which will provide you with a reasonable target price for your area. I paid 1.54% over invoice and no area markup for my X3 3.5 with similar options. 3 weeks to go to pick it up in Greenville.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I've been worried the popularity of the redesign would make it more difficult to negotiate.

scs, was the M Sport package part of the report? It's only been available for a month or two.

Under invoice is pretty unrealistic for a newly released vehicle. Under MSRP, sure, but over invoice, which is the nominal dealer cost.

I've been keeping an eye on pricing for hte last couple of months and $500-$1000 over invoice seems to be the norm. But it depends on a lot of factors: your negotiation abilities, MSRP, the dealer, availability, sales guy, etc.

I'm actually leaning towards a Q5 right now and away from the X3 due to price.

My access to the report expired (you only get 30 days). I believe the M Sport option was there, but it was not something I was interested in so I did not focus on it. I did get the sport package. I know BMW APPS was not there, which I am also getting.

scs: I ordered a report after reading your post, they're now $14. The one thing I don't like about the M Sport package is that it's not available in bronze metallic.

Thunder: I was considering a Q5, but I preferred the X3's looks a lot more.
