Be happy to have a manual shifter! My 2002 automatic has its 3rd gearbox in.

I am happy, I love this truck. I've taken the advice to heart and have gotten much better. It is hard to resist the torque though, love those high rpm shifts. I did have the opportunity to drive a slush box X5 and it changes the whole dynamic of the vehicle.

Hawaii,
All good stuff above, and congrats on your manual trans X! Fwiw, I do frequent 2nd gear starts, on any kind of slight decline, or in a rolling stop, in lieu of first. You will become accustomed to short shifting 1-2, esp if you don't need to accelerate quickly. 50+ yrs of riding HDs have made short shifting 'standard'. The revs are a concern, esp with all the highway high speed driving we do, but our '01 3.0 hasn't shown any 'engine problems' of any kind in 13+ years and nearly 100k miles, knock on wood. I do wish we had that rare slightly overdrive like 6th, but we don't. And, you are driving around an island, so it isn't like you are doing 800 mile all day trips at ~80 mph. Drive it, enjoy it! GL, mD Here is our X at 80ish, and our VetteVert at almost 80, for a RPMs comparo.

The PO of my X5 was an Air Force Officer and purchased the vehicle new in Germany in 2002. I have all the records from new including a ton of service and repairs in the last 2 years(over $7000). Currently just a little over 126K on the clock. I've had too many BMW's to be overly concerned with miles, I had a 2000 323iT that finally gave up the ghost at 285K. Are the German delivery X5's built in Germany?
