Obviously, it depends on what one does with it that makes it a good or bad value.

Cosmetically, it falls far short. My experience is that if a vehicle falls short in the cosmetic department it likely falls short mechanically and some of the repairs will be surprises just down the road.

If I had a stock 4.6 that I wanted to mod, this 4.6, as bad as it could be, would be a value. I would put all the Dinan stuff on my 4.6 put my stuff on the other 4.6. Then I would fix the major stuff on the one I bought and sell it with full disclosure. I wouldn't care if I came out ahead as I would have a great performing 4.6 at a very reasonable cost for that amount of added performance.

I feel like my thoughts are getting confirmed on this car. The only people going out there to see this or who are interested in this car are enthusiasts like us. Sadly, because of that very reason, we are picky about what is acceptable or not with a car with that kind of mileage.

The overall presentation of the car is probably disappointing prospective buyers and they are walking away.

Seller said he had the control arms bushings - I would say install them to stop the wobbling. Fix the bumper - go to the dealer and grad a couple of the headlight washer covers.

Clean it up nice. Fix little dings if possible. And then even ask for more if he wants - at least then the car is closer to being what it is promising to be.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
^This is what I'm saying. Even if he put a grand in, got it professionally detailed, etc, he could probably get 2k more for the car.

Just curious -

How do we know only 26 existed?

I called Dinan to verify my car was delivered as a Dinan and they couldnt tell me how many others were like it.

Dinan products, at least at that time, were installed at an authorized installer anytime after delivery. They were not factory installed. Some dealers were authorized as well as some local independent shops. Dinan changed hands not that long ago but prior to that they had records of installs of Dinan products. I don't know the number of X5s that were supercharged but there were very few. The supercharged X5s have a Dinan 'plate' that identifies them as such. Steve Dinan has a new company. He may be of help, nice guy.

They do keep records of mods by VIN, though when I visited them in Morgan Hill after purchasing my X5 in San Jose they were unable to verify anything with my VIN. One of the directors there (nice guy, have his card somewhere) gave us a tour and showed us the products in development. S65 engines on stands everywhere, carbon fiber parts, etc. I asked about the reason for no supercharger/turbo options on the N62 and the answer was not enough demand for the M6x supercharger option.

One cool thing, that remains unverified (though I doubt it's the same truck), was that they remembered an employee who owned an imola e53 X5 who would bring it in for mods and software programming in his spare time. They thought my X5 might be that one which would explain why there were no VIN records on it and the mods.

One of the techs at the dealership in Reno just finished rebuilding Steve Dinan's actual old S3 4.6is. he did everything down to new rod bearings and a rebuilt supercharger. He just bought 1 of only 2 5hp24 transmissions for the 4.6is left in Germany for it as well.
