There was so much history on mass air flow sensors, I decided to go buy a can of cleaner and try it. Used half a can, let sensor dry then test drove. All issues gone for about 36 hours then came back. Removed the sensor from the housing, used the other half can of cleaner, ran flawlessly for ~2weeks. Now the condition is back, so I am going to get a sensor. Rockauto has just the sensor (not the housing) for just over $100 from Delphi. Thinking of trying it. Will let you all know. Thanks |

Cleaning the MAF sometimes works and sometimes it only helps for a short period of time. Be sure to purchase an OEM or OE MAF.

Classic PIA vacuum leak. Un-metered air is getting in somewhere. Have you had any recent work done around the intake? Get a can of starter fluid and spritz the areas around the intake, (BE CAREFUL - did you really need me to say that?) particularly hoses . Vacuum leaks tend to have the same symptoms as other issues (filters, fuel pump, etc.). Is the X5 air intake plastic? Maybe a crack?

He cleaned the MAF and the problem went away for a period of time. Did not check for vacuum leak and vacuum leaks don't go away on their own.

I'm curious was there any resolution to your bogging issue? I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with a 2003 E53 4.6is!
