I missed the comment about taking the key apart.

The battery in the key has nothing to do with the EWS system. More often than not people damage the keys EWS components when the key is cut open.

https://www.bmwgm5.com/KF_WoS.htm

I was going to suggest for you to try another key as we have been seeing cases where there is a crank, no start that is key related, which is not expected with the way the EWS system is designed.

New key for about $135 delivered if you READ carefully the info in this thread - what did you pay for your E46 diamond key replacement? - E46Fanatics

Only other thing I might suggest is trying a good 2 second shot of starting fluid into the MAF opening to see what happens. Although you have fuel, it could be contaminated, but you claim there is no spark, so if you are comfortable there is really no spark, then the starting fluid is not going to do anything.

I guess damaging the key while opening is a very common thing? Sorry again for that suggestion.

I've done it many times (to solder in new batteries) and never had an issue... in fact that reminds me I have to do it to one of my 4.8is keys to replace the battery.

Another reason for a no spark condition is that the unloader relay is not providing power to the coils. You can remove a connector to one of the coils and test for power at the connector with the key on. If you have no power at any of the terminals in the connector with the key on, that is why you don't have a spark. The unloader relay receives power from a fusible link, located where the glove box fuse panel is located. You will need to drop the fusible link panel down once you get to the glove box fuse panel by releasing some clips and then removing a cover. Page ECL-18 and ECL-19 show this in the Bentley manual.

hi Ghost

The codes that persisted after clearing was:
DSC - 5EB1 Steering - Angle Sensor, supply

DME - 27A4 EWS3.3 interface engine management immobilizer - no EWS telegram

Did some searching on DME / EWS
Here is an interesting link with details on EWS, the E53 4.8is does use as

(google found it from this link)
http://www.computersolutions.cn/blog...02/BMW_EWS.pdf

I have not gone through it all in detail but here is what caught my search

(top of page 21)

"If the “Codes” do NOT match, the DME “rolls forward” to the next code according
to the “Rolling Code Table” and makes the same calculations. The DME continues
this “forward roll” up to a maximum of 200 times or until a match is found. Failure
to find a match will result in the engine cranking but not starting.
"

also the Workshop hint on that page caught my attention too

"Workshop Hint:
If during diagnosis the key is switched on while the DME or EWS modules are “Disconnected”, the alignment procedure will need to be carried out.
The “Alignment” procedure may be carried out an unlimited number of times."

Maybe someone here knows how to re-align EWS to DME via INPA or GT1

Junkycosmos, thanks for your thoughts and follow up on this not to mention your visit to help me pull the codes. You are a true fellow X5er

To summarize, I have a crank and no start. The fuel and air are ok however, it appears there is no spark. The code pulled by GT1 is:
DME - 27A4 EWS3.3 interface engine management immobilizer - no EWS telegram

The communication between the DME and EWS appear to have been interrupted thus preventing subsequent steps to commence and initiate a spark for ignition.

Does anyone know how to re-establish or re-align the communication between the two modules (DME and EWS)?

Thoughts appreciated?

Junkycosmos, I found this on the web after some time searching. Is this an option in your GT1? Could you look it up and let me know pls?

It has been suggested before but did you ever try a second key? Opening up the key may had damaged the chip inside the key.

Just powered up my old copy of Carsoft 6.5 and under Special Functions, it has a button to Sync EWS <---> Engine Control Unit. Maybe someone in your area has a copy of Carsoft 6.5.

The car came with 1 key when I purchased it so this is my only key.
The starting issue occurred before the key was opened and the reason for opening the key was to diagnose this issue. Although I mentioned the buttons subsequent to opening are inoperable, I still need to perform the reset or reinititalizing procedure for the key which I have not done yet as I just learned about it.

This may solve my buttons operations issue but won't solve the starting issue.

Buy another key, you need one anyway and it will likely resolve your no start problem.

About $145 shipped to your front door.

BMW Parts -

Sean used to be the contact there, not sure if he is still there. You will need to Fax/PDF a copy of your license & registration as proof of ownership.

Key will be shipped cut to fit locks and will start the engine assuming there are no other problems.
