Been lazy. Need to update this. Nothing in the way of mods, but have some maintenance to add to the list/expenses.

Okay, I've been pretty remiss in keeping this updated due to a combination of severe laziness after taking care of growing family/house/car obligations and pure apathy. Sooo... with the new baby due in a less than a month, his nursery being finished, his sister being moved from the nursery and her room being redone, new flooring throughout the house, a complete kitchen remodel, family trip, couple of nationals tennis tourneys, etc, etc, etc... I'm enjoying a slight lull in the chaos to catch this up to current. I'll probably also post some of my input on 4.8is ownership since the "interesting" way in which I acquired the X.

Oh, also edited front suspension work on earlier page with part numbers and costs for the sake of consistency.

March 15 - 23, 2016

- Opened the "permaseal" headlights and painted corners silver... what a PITA. $0.00

- Installed LED angel eyes in the modified lights. $49.98

- Installed Osram Nightbreakers from Powerbulbs. $113.38

- Sanded, polished, and sealed headlight lenses. $0.00

March 23, 2016

- Had another alignment done at Firestone after all the front suspension work. Have lifetime alignment so cost me nothing. Everything came back in spec except front right camber which was off by less than .5 a degree. Still something to look into in the future. $0.00

April 5, 2016

- The transfer actuator gear decided to crap out on me during a three week family road trip around Florida. Unfortunately the family I was visiting owns no tools and lives in a high rise condo in downtown Miami so fixing it myself was out of the question. Small indy my uncle uses did an awesome job though for a reasonable price all things considered. Haven't had any problems since. $235.40

May 2, 2016

- Replaced a missing tool tray in the rear trunk area that the previous owner discarded when he installed the BSW amplifier in that spot. I fixed his installation and so wanted the tray back and bought a used one on Ebay. (51478402111) $25.00

- Bought 3 new plastic nuts to secure the above tool tray. (16131176747) $0.99

- Replaced a "blind plug" that I dropped/lost when running the angel eye wires into the cabin next to the brake booster. (51711872829) $2.05

May 5, 2016

This was a fun one. Had an expansion tank crack on my way to Vegas for a nationals tennis tourney. Was with my mom since it was going to be over Mother's Day weekend... I asked her if she wanted to go. We had just left El Paso and thus, Texas when I happened to notice that the warning arrows were on the cluster display. "Mom, what message popped up when those first came on?" Her, "What, I didn't even notice those." Me, "It's probably a rear brake bulb out but pull over anyway, just in case... my luck is terrible." Well thank all that is right and good in the world I noticed the check lights because it was a low coolant notification. We pulled into a 7/11 just on the outskirts (far side) of Las Cruces, NM to assess the situation. Got some water from inside and of course it just poured out. So I called everyone in Las Cruces (it was 3:00PM) and no one had the tank... M54's all day, but N62... nope. Dealership in El Paso didn't have one, but luckily the parts guy was understanding and recommended a small parts retailer who actually had it. It was URO brand but beggars can't be choosers right!? Rented a Toyota Camry (I hope I die before having to drive one of those again) and booked it back to El Paso, got the parts, drove back, swapped tanks, bled cooling system, and returned rental. We were back on the road to Vegas by 7:00PM At a cost of:

- Expansion tank (171317501959) $59.99

- Expansion tank cap (17111742231) $14.99

- BMW OE Coolant (82141467704) $25.99

- Enterprise Camry crapbox rental ~$65.00

You can see the long thin crack below. Looks like a casting leftover... but it is definitely a crack.

May 14, 2016

- Installed new brake rotor holding bolts, don't remember why. (34211161806) $5.15

July 21, 2016

- Installed a pair of H&R 15mm spacers on the rears. They were given to me by a buddy. $0.00

- Extended lug bolts for said spacers were not free unfortunately. Conical 14x1.5x43mm x10 bolts. $27.90

October 5, 2016

Window regulator #2 for this X5, I assume all windows will need this treatment until all 4 have been done. Shouldn't have to deal with it again with the repairs and mods to keep the cables from coming out of the sliders again. I suppose I could do the rears proactively... but where's the fun in that? Why deprive myself of having it fail when least opportune? I say, "No sir!"

- Removed the shredded passenger side window regulator and pulled the good motor off of it. $0.00

- Installed a good used OEM regulator purchased off ebay after swapping my good motor onto it. $42.79

- Installed a new slider/cable guide and did the zip tie mod on both sliders. Had sliders as they came in sets from my previous driver's side regulator repair. $0.00

- Installed new window clips and regreased everything. (51338254781) $5.65

And that pretty much brings us to current but I do have some parts on order (including one that is painted imola red... that's the only hint you get) so this should get updated after they arrive and are installed. My feelings on X ownership thus far will have to wait as it is 1:45AM and I need to get some shut eye.

Hey Crystalworks I noticed that you have an off set front license plate holder on the front of your X5 E53. Can you tell me the vendor where you acquired this from? I think I am going to be needing to go this route. Thanks

I got it from an Ebay vendor. Here you go:

For 99-06 BMW E53 X5 Front Tow Hook License Plate Mount Relocator Bracket | eBay

Be aware though, you will have to make a small short plate and bend it slightly for best fitment. This is also necessary because if you don't the PDC sensors go nuts. Takes some fiddling, but it works... and you don't have to drill the front OE plate holder onto the bumper.

Man, those black grilles bother me so much for some reason... I guess it's because they remind me of the grilles on the first-generation 6 series, which I think is one of the ugliest cars ever designed :P

Other than that, looking good! You must have a very understanding mother— if I was in the same situation with my mother she would be annoyed and would call the car an old piece of crap.

I feel you on the grilles. Unfortunately, they are are the only available gloss black grille for the face lifted E53. I tried painting (professionally) the OEM grille semi-gloss black to match the sport trim on my last X5 and it looked like crap after a very short period of time. As a result I wanted to purchase something in gloss and this was it as far as options. If you can find something else... LET ME KNOW. Seriously, I'll order them STAT.

My Mom was a little nervous, but she's used to my cars and knows I'll take care of it one way or another. LOL, she did get a little miffed though when the Enterprise agent was flirting with me and "wasting time" as my Mom put it. I got a free "upgrade" (Corolla to a Camry) out of it so I wasn't in a hurry. Worst case scenario would have been a tow to the El Paso dealer while we took a rental to Vegas and would have picked the X up on the way home. That would have sucked for sure though and I'm glad I fixed it relatively painlessly.

@crystalworks: Have you tried wrapping the OEM grille in some kind of good film (3M)? Maybe this will last longer?

I opted for some smoked black chromed grills for the X. They looked so good on my E39 M5 I had to grace the X5 with a set of these. Subtle but in theme with the black and slightly different than what is normally out there.

I still have my factory titanium grille... so I'll see what it would take to wrap it. Doesn't look like fun though.

Jay, you have a link to the grilles you mention?
