Turbocharger on a BMW X5 3.0i
I was reading about some aftermarket turbochargers for the 330 on the M54 engine. Just wondering if anybody has put one of these on an X5 3.0i M54 engine? I'd love to know details and specs if you can share. Thanks, Aaron |

Superchargers on the M54 are popular. Look at the kit made by ESS Tuning.

This needed to be done years ago.

Yup, been glancing periodically at the e46fanatics forced induction forum for a bit now.
The ESS looks good for superchargers and the Technique Tuning looks to be the turbo kit to get. Either costs about as much as the truck is worth though.

Active Autowerks has an M54 FI system too.

^yup. And I think it was mentioned by their rep in e46fanatics they were being discontinued.
Anyway it seems from what I read all the various FI options do make power on these motors but there is a big chance your auto tranny wont take it long term. Manuals seem to be doing fine.

I would think a twin turbo system would be more efficient and stay hotter. You would have to change up the exhaust system a lot and move the cats down stream a bit farther. Fortunately, there is plenty of space.
Turbos for a 1.5l (3.0l/2)engine should be plentiful and cheap. Someone would have to read a lot of turbo maps though to try and match one up with a VE table of the 3.0 to do a good job. The big problems I see would be figuring out how to not pressurize the crankcase, and changing the fuel pump. I have some TB04ls and associated equipment lying around and thought about putting them on my E53. But I don't know how to tune an E53, and I do (sort of) know how to tune 3800 series II pontiacs, which I happen to also have.

I was one of the first TT e46 kit customers (iirc i was the second). That kit would be tits on the x5. It also did wonders to my highway mileage.

^I'm a lurker on fanatics and I do remember seeing you there, good to see you over here!
I dont really remember the names of the others who got the kit, heck I havent even finished Pei's thread on it lol! I think I remember someone who had it on his coupe that got ran into, hope that wasnt you. So you got an X, M54? Will the E46 kit drop right in or will it require changes?

My car is safe. It hasn't run since 2011. It was fine until I sent it to a cage builder. It's still there. He keeps promising it's almost done. Pretty sure my motor needs a full rebuild just from sitting. The kit PEI has is actually my original kit. I went n to build my own thing. Nickg of TT had a manual e53 and I think part of the plan was to make a kit for it. Maybe n55 e70s dissuaded him? I'm not sure if he ever made the piping. But if anyone is capable of making a solid tune for these things to keep them from knocking, this is the guy. I don't know if a turbo fits on a bottom mount with the 4wd system as it has been made. The TT manifold would be perfectly good for any of the purposes I would have with an x5, if it fit. If it doesn't others might. There are some weird manifolds out there. Active has a really weird rhd-intended manifold that clears steering, might be what's called for, i dunno. Maybe custom. Maybe topmount. The first setup I had, I enjoyed spooling the turbo at around 1000rpm in 6th and riding it to redline... because idiot. Getting closer to the point, when i tore it apart and the rings were really tired, there was zero sign of detonation. Last edited by bluejeansonfire; 01-20-2016 at 08:29 AM. |
