Had planned on rebuilding, but as when we opened it up, the bearings had spun, and the crankshaft was damaged... Bought an engine with just under a 100k for 4k. This way knew exactly where I was maintenance wise. Been enjoying it for the last couple years now... Interested as to why yours blew up....
Well my guys have completely convinced me to get an LKQ used engine. They swear by them so we ordered one today. Everyone else seems to be selling the SAME 55Kmiles (supposedly) engine for like $6K and I am told they are all hard to deal with on warranties and everything else. Paid $3575 delivered no tax for an LKQ with 116Kmiles. Very few alternatives out there these are RARE engines! Cannot use any but the X5 type N62 motor.

The guys are going to do a rebuild of sorts on this used motor and we will go from there! The hit will be Mucho dinero but can't toss the truck yet the exterior and interior way too nice! Glad I have another couple of cars...

As I mentioned before LKQ is a good choice. I have installed engines from them and 2 used transmissions and have not had any problems with their units. They deal with quality salvage yards. This should work out for you. With the new engine out of the vehicle now is a good time to do a re-seal and cooling system maintenance. If it were me I would also want to address any potential valve seal issues and have the heads sent out to be done. This way I know what I have in my engine. I am all about returning an X5 back to former glory and operation.

One a last note it appears that the $9500 X5 is now more like a $15 - $16K vehicle? You will now have all the appropriate documentation to substantiate your well cared for X5 just in case you want to sell it in the future.

Really, no other N62 fits? Even with swapping the e53 N62 parts over?

It can be switched over it just may be more hassle and labor charge to make it happen. He is already in the hole for more than what he bargained for.

It'd be interesting to see a teardown of your old engine. See how bad the damage is, etc.

Exactly. We are dealing with a 4WD vehicle as well. My mechanics, who are very capable guys, don't think it is worth all the extra work retrofitting. They say it will be very time consuming and costly. I have a CL55AMG they care for and baby as well and they get tons of referrals from me. They don't want to screw me in any way I do not believe. We have a sort of partnership. They help out with some stuff for free after getting a big job in that I sent their way.

I trust them for the moment so it's all good!

Still wondering why I like this X5 so much! Guess it's looks, style and performance. Pretty dubious reliability but WTF!

Folks got to realize what they are signing up for when you buy one of these bmw X5's V8s etc. Most all of them need some level of sorting out but this is just the process and once you've navigated past the storm you can start to enjoy the experience that they provide. As with anything stick with it to make it right and it will be worth it in the end. We are looking to hear the next chapter of the X5 adventure once the engine goes in. Keep us tuned.
