Oil Leak-Oil Pan or Rear Main Seal

I have an engine oil leak that started small and now its a lot. I have to fix it now in my 2002 4.4. When the CCV hoses froze it started, since then I replaced the valve covers, they are fine.

It's coming out of the rubber trans inspection plug and its engine oil. I thought it was a rear main seal. I was searching and found it could be a oil pan gasket too.

Need help in the diagnose because you cant see anything through that inspection hole.

Does anyone know the most common problem...In my searches I'm seeing oil pan gaskets leak I that same exact spot...

This pic was a year ago and its much worse now

Yes....and I changed that too.

Does anyone have any links to change an oil pan on this model, I cant find it.

I don't see how the oil pan can even leak back in there but I searched other boards and found 5 series with the same motor had common oil pan leaks in the same trans inspection hole.

That looks hard to attempt. Out of my league for now.

My hell I am swapping out a leaky radiator on my e46 and have broke the temp sensor, radiator plug on the new one and damaged a hose. 4 hours has turned into more new parts and lots of time. Oh well.

This one stumped me...turned out to be the front trans pump seal. The oil looks and smells like engine oil...whatever.

This is the rear main seal, looks fine but I'm going to change this too.

Notice the coolant leaks from the valley pan I did 2 years ago on the top of the block.

While I'm at it...it's time to change the Alternator before it leaves me stranded. This is by far the most expensive car I have ever owned. Mercedes and Porsches are MUCH cheaper to own.

Hi all,
Rockit, when you put everything back together, what kind of gasket maker did you use on engine?? I am having my front and rear seals changed and some other stuff done to the engine and need to buy the gasket maker sealant for the job. I've researched and seen a wide range of brands/types used by various people. Also, did you use "Sensor Safe" sealant??
Thanks for any help or advice

Steve
